Your Opportunity
As a
Laboratory Technician
with TAFE Queensland, you will contribute to the efficient operation of the organisation through the provision of a quality technical support role to teaching staff in providing a practical learning environment to suit the needs of curriculum implementation.
This position reports to the relevant Educational Operations Manager.
This is a
Temporary, Part-Time (0.2FTE)
opportunity to 18 December 2026 unless otherwise determined.
The position will be based at Hervey Bay; however, you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses.
Key Responsibilities
* Live a safety culture, lead by example and support the Workplace Health Safety System to create a East Coast wide safety culture.
* Prepare all laboratory requirements such as equipment, consumables, chemicals and foodstuffs for food science, hygiene and biology classes prior to the scheduled class.
* Prepare and maintain chemical solutions, microbiological media, agar plates, and subcultures for food science, hygiene and biology classes.
* Ensure safe storage and safe disposal of chemical solutions, microbiological media, and subcultures after classes and maintain the laboratory and equipment in a clean and tidy state.
* Operate the autoclave to sterilise media and biological hazardous waste.
* Assist the Technical Teacher in the demonstration of laboratory equipment and techniques for microbiology, biology, food science and hygiene classes.
* Order stock and control stock levels of consumables and equipment used in practical classes.
* Schedule and perform maintenance or arrange to maintain and calibrate equipment in laboratories, for example, electronic thermometers, pH meters etc.
* Implement and control the operation of the Hygiene Monitoring Program for various areas of the organisation.
* Comply with legislation, standards and best practice in the use of laboratory equipment, preparation of material for classes and disposal of chemical solutions and media cultures.
* Maintain existing quality assurance and safety procedures for all laboratories and review/develop procedures where appropriate.
* Contribute to the achievement of TAFE Queensland's quality policies by encouraging an environment where high quality of work is achieved and is supported by the adherence/development of quality system documentation.
* Contribute to the success of transformation and cultural change through promoting and modelling the established values of Safety First, Working Together, Focussing on Our Customer, Showing Initiative and Taking Responsibility
How You Will Be Assessed
* A demonstrated knowledge of contemporary workplace health and safety legislation, Australian Standards and best practice guidelines as they apply to the preparation, storage, and disposal of chemicals and biologically hazardous materials.
* Knowledge, and practical application of basic instrumentation and equipment found in laboratories and the safe and effective use of autoclaves.
* Knowledge of the use, calibration and maintenance requirements of equipment and instruments used in nursing laboratories and knowledge of biology, and/or food science, and /or food processing as they apply in a food technology environment.
* Proven ability to work as part of a team while remaining flexible and adaptable to organise and prioritise own workload and apply well developed organisational skills to tasks or projects.
* High level of communication and client service skills to work collaboratively with stakeholders and colleagues to achieve outstanding client service.
Mandatory Qualifications/Requirements
* Possession of an Associate Diploma or Diploma of Applied Science (or equivalent). Applicants studying towards these equivalent qualifications with relevant laboratory experience will also be considered.
