Primary objective
Applies specialist knowledge, skills, attributes and abilities within a specified area of clinical practice in therapeutic and professional
relationships with individuals, as well as with families, groups and communities.
Context statement
This Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will support the Nurse Unit Manager to optimise patient care through the supervision the delivery of
quality patient care, adhering to standards of nursing practice (NSQHS) and implementing changes to clinical practice where there is a
need identified. The CNS will also contribute to the education and supervision of nursing staff, and participate in quality improvement
projects, and facilitate the provision of clinical support to our multidisciplinary team in line with service standards to ensure optimal patient
outcomes are achieved across medical imaging.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provides a resource to other members of staff within a designated portfolio e.g. education, shift management.
2. Accountable for planning, provision and communication of nursing practice including the evaluation and required revision of practice,
and for staff and client safety across a shift.
3. Provides leadership to other service and speciality positions in the determination of service or speciality quality, patient/client care
and specific work principles and standards.
4. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
5. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia or eligible for same.
2. Demonstrates well-developed knowledge, skills and experience in the relevant area of nursing/midwifery with depth in some areas and
a broad range of skills.
3. Demonstrated ability to act as a clinical resource person and role model including mentoring and preceptoring new and junior staff and
students.
4. Demonstrates contribution to the development and implementation of local activities beyond direct client care e.g. clinical education,
assist in management, research/quality assurance activities.
5. Demonstrates effective communication skills to influence and convince others in a mature, confident manner including maintaining
productive multi-disciplinary working relationships, effectively dealing with challenging behaviours and the resolution of conflicts.
6. Demonstrates well-developed knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural issues, influences and sensitivities that influence
health care provision for clients and families.
Desirable
Graduate Certificate beyond entry-to-practice in specialty.
