Overview
The CNC Laser Operator plays an important role in the metal fabrication workshop, ensuring the efficient operation of advanced fiber laser cutting machines. The operator is responsible for producing high-quality, precise parts by interpreting technical drawings, setting up and maintaining machines, and adhering to strict safety and quality standards. This position requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to maintaining productivity and safety within the workshop.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Operation:
Set up and operate fiber laser cutting machines, including but not limited to the
CNC HSG T3 6kW Tube Laser
and
CNC Yewei 6kW Fiber Optic Laser Cutter
.
Select and load the appropriate materials, including metal sheets, tubes, and other raw stock, either manually or with the assistance of a forklift. Ensure all materials are securely positioned on the laser bed of the machine to prevent movement during operation.
Input and adjust machine settings, including cutting speed, laser power, and focus parameters, to match job specifications.
Monitor the cutting process to ensure consistent quality and prevent errors or defects.
Troubleshoot and resolve minor machine issues during operation to minimize downtime.
Unload the fabricated parts from the laser bed, deburr them if required, and place in appropriate locations for dispatch to the customer.
Confirm the quantity of fabricated parts, conduct thorough quality checks, and prepare the items for shipment as requested.
Technical Work:
Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD designs to understand job requirements.
Utilize nesting software to optimize material usage and reduce waste.
Perform dimensional checks on completed parts using calipers, micrometers, and other measuring tools to verify accuracy against job specifications.
Make necessary adjustments to the machine or program to correct deviations from specifications.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
Perform routine maintenance on laser cutting machines, including cleaning optics, replacing filters, and calibrating laser heads, replace cutting slats, emptying dust collectors, emptying slugs under trays.
Lubricating the machine moving parts.
General cleaning of the area and machine. Get under the machine and clean it.
Inspect and maintain auxiliary equipment such as chiller systems and fume extractors.
Maintain a log of machine performance and report any malfunctions or maintenance needs to the maintenance team.
Quality Control
Inspect finished products for quality, ensuring they meet dimensional, surface finish, and tolerance specifications.
Document inspection results and complete quality assurance checklists.
Identify and address non-conformities in the production process and recommend corrective actions.
Health and Safety Compliance
Strictly adhere to all safety protocols and operating procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and protective footwear.
Follow workshop safety guidelines, including Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) specific to laser cutting operations.
Maintain a clean and hazard-free work environment by properly disposing of scrap materials and keeping workstations organized.
Collaboration and Communication
Work closely with workshop supervisors and team members to prioritize production schedules and ensure timely delivery of parts.
Communicate equipment or material issues promptly to supervisors or relevant personnel.
Provide feedback on ways to improve efficiency and streamline the cutting process.
Documentation and Reporting
Complete Workshop Production sheet, timesheets, and other relevant documentation accurately and on time.
Assist in maintaining records of Machine Maintenance, Material ordered and project progress.
Key Competencies and Skills
Technical Skills
:
Demonstrated experience operating Fiber laser cutting machines in a manufacturing or metal fabrication environment.
Familiarity with different metals (e.g., mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum) and their respective cutting parameters.
Ability to use precision measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, and gauges) for quality checks.
Engineering Drawing Reading
: Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, and specifications.
Problem-Solving
: Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot and resolve fabrication issues.
Attention to Detail
: Commitment to producing high-quality work with precision and accuracy.
Safety Awareness
: Comprehensive understanding of WHS regulations and practices in metal fabrication.
Qualifications and Experience
Trade Qualification
: Certificate III or IV in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (or equivalent).
Experience
:
oAt least 5 years of experience in metal fabrication.
oFormal training or certification in CNC laser cutting or metal fabrication.
oProficiency with nesting software and CAD/CAM programs.
oBasic knowledge of machine maintenance, including electrical and mechanical components.
Certifications
: Forklift Ticket, White card
Workplace Health and Safety Responsibilities
Follow all safety procedures and policies outlined by the company.
Actively participate in WHS training and emergency drills.
Ensure the safe operation of machinery and tools.
Report any hazards, incidents, or injuries immediately to the Workshop Supervisor.
Physical Requirements
Physical work environment requiring standing for extended periods, bending, and lifting materials weighing up to 20 kg. Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and working in various conditions.
