Operations Controller
Also known as: Transport Scheduler | Logistics Coordinator | Operations Coordinator | Fleet Coordinator
Roster: 4 on / 4 off (rotating) – Monday to Friday during initial 3-month training period
About McColl's Transport
McColl's Transport has been moving Australia's most essential products since 1952. Today we're the country's largest independent carrier of dairy, food-grade liquids and bulk chemicals, operating a modern fleet of 263+ prime movers and 770+ tankers across every mainland state. Our Bulk Food Grade Division handles inter-factory food-grade operations including wine, beer, juice, chocolate, oils and concentrates — some of Australia's most trusted brands rely on us to get it right, every time.
The Role
We have an opportunity for a motivated and safety-focused Operations Controller to join our Bulk Food Grade Division in Geelong. In other organisations this role might be called a Transport Scheduler, Logistics Coordinator, Operations Coordinator or Fleet Coordinator — what matters to us is what you can do, not what your current job title says.
Reporting to the Operations Manager, you'll be the engine room of daily operational delivery and owning scheduling, driver management, customer liaison and compliance, and driving the kind of service excellence our customers expect. It's a hands-on, fast-paced role where no two days look the same, and you'll have real autonomy to make it your own.
Roster note:
Once your training is complete (approximately 3 months on a Monday–Friday schedule), you'll transition to a rotating 4 on / 4 off roster. This gives you genuine work-life balance with large blocks of time off, a real lifestyle benefit if you're after more than a standard 9-to-5.
What You'll Do
• Build and manage efficient, cost-effective daily schedules aligned with DIFOT targets and divisional KPIs
• Oversee all assets within the division to ensure service excellence is delivered consistently
• Manage driver fatigue compliance, including Local, Standard and BFM requirements and review electronic work diaries
• Coordinate procurement, repair, delivery and recovery of plant and equipment within budget
• Liaise with customers, manage account setup and rates, and conduct regular performance reviews
• Maintain transport administration including all regulatory paperwork and data integrity in internal systems
• Support driver performance management, induction, training records and divisional recruitment
• Manage outsourced personnel in accordance with Chain of Responsibility (COR) legislation
• Identify and escalate operational issues and contribute to continuous improvement
What We're Looking For
You don't need to tick every box. If you have a solid foundation in transport or logistics operations and the drive to grow into the parts of this role you haven't done yet, we want to hear from you. The right attitude and work ethic matters as much as your experience, and we're committed to setting you up properly through our structured training program.
You'll be well placed if you have:
• Experience in transport operations, scheduling, dispatch or logistics coordination
• A working knowledge of Chain of Responsibility (COR) legislation
• A Basic Fatigue Management (BFM) Certificate, or willingness to obtain one
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to juggle competing priorities under pressure
• Clear, confident communication with drivers, customers and internal stakeholders
• Comfort with technology and operational systems
It's a bonus if you bring:
• Experience in food-grade, dairy or chemical transport environments
• Tertiary qualifications in Transport, Logistics or a related discipline
What's on Offer
• Competitive salary
• Permanent, full-time role in an essential service industry and genuine job security
• Rotating 4 on / 4 off roster once trained = extended blocks of time off built into your lifestyle
• Structured 3-month Monday–Friday training and onboarding period
• A role where your contribution directly shapes operational outcomes every day
