This role is critical in ensuring the safe operation of refinery processes that utilise the Bayer Process for alumina production and power generation systems, including steam turbines and boilers. The successful candidate will provide expert advice on process safety, lead risk assessments, and drive compliance with local and international safety standards. You will collaborate with production, engineering, and maintenance teams to implement safety strategies and foster a strong safety culture across the site.
Key Responsibilities - Process Safety:
* Process Hazard Analysis (PHA): Lead or participate in HAZOPs, HAZIDs, LOPA, and other risk assessments for Bayer Process and power generation operations.
* Risk Management: Develop and implement frameworks for managing high-risk areas such as caustic handling, high-pressure digestion, chemical reactions, steam systems, and fuel handling.
* Safety Systems Oversight: Ensure critical safety systems (pressure relief, emergency shutdown, fire protection) meet operational and regulatory requirements.
* Incident Investigation: Conduct root cause analyses for process safety incidents and recommend corrective actions.
* Compliance & Audits: Maintain compliance with OSHA, AS/NZS 4801, ISO 45001, and internal standards; support audits and corrective actions.
* Safety Culture & Training: Deliver training programs on process safety and hazard recognition tailored to Bayer Process activities.
* Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement best practices to enhance process safety performance.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the primary contact for process safety queries and collaborate across departments.
Key Responsibilities - Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Substances:
* Maintain Hazardous Substances Register (ChemAlert).
* Ensure compliance with the Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2004 and related regulations.
* Develop and review Hazardous Substances Management Plans.
* Monitor site hazards and trigger reporting to Risk/Compliance Specialist.
* Support chemical risk assessments and hazardous substance handling.
* Align chemical management systems with critical control frameworks (Bow Ties, PMHMPs).
* Provide fortnightly safety support to allocated departments.
What you'll need to succeed:
* Strong background in process safety within refinery or heavy industry environments.
* Experience with Bayer Process and power generation systems highly regarded.
* Knowledge of PHA methodologies (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA).
* Familiarity with Dangerous Goods compliance and hazardous substance management.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Relevant qualifications/tickets.
* Ability to pass a pre-employment medical and drug/alcohol screening.
* Based SOR, Western Australia.
