For more about Positioning Australia, click the link below: About Positioning Australia | Geoscience Australia The National Geodesy Section is responsible for ensuring that Australia has a state‐of‐the‐art geospatial reference system that enables accurate and robust precise positioning. The team leads Australia's international contribution to the sustainment of the Global Geodetic Reference Frame and is responsible for a range of geodetic observation functions supporting Australia's geodetic capability, including Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), satellite laser ranging, and gravity modelling programs. The key duties of the position include: The Geodetic VLBI Data Scientist role provides critical input to the National Geodesy Section's work program, focusing on VLBI and the determination of Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP), the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), and the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF). This role is classified at the APS6 level; for guidance on performance and behaviour expectations of an APS6, please refer to the Integrated Leadership System. In this role you will:Participate in campaigns to measure and analyse the changes in the Earth's orientation and position in space, including VLBI data correlation, post‐processing, and analysis, in collaboration with key project partner, the University of Tasmania. Lead/support projects to develop technical improvements to modernise geodetic VLBI data correlation and analysis workflows, leveraging high performance computing environments including the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI). Investigate how to combine and compare geodetic measurements from complementary techniques to provide a more accurate positioning capability and ultimately to contribute to ITRF and ICRF. Prepare and provide data, advice, information, and support on VLBI, geodesy, and PNT to a diverse range of domestic and international stakeholders, the submission of VLBI data products to the IVS Combination Centre. Demonstrate technical leadership, including professional supervision and reviewing the work of peers. Contribute to the positive team culture through continuous delivery, development, agility and stakeholder engagement. Assist the broader National Geodesy team with other operational activities as required. Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualificationsTechnical qualifications (or relevant experience) in geodesy, physics, maths, and/or geoinformatics. Experience correlating and analysing VLBI data is highly desirable. Experience with scientific programming languages (such as C++, MATLAB, and Python), high performance computing, and cloud platforms. Experience working collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders with different domains of expertise. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.
