About the Role This is a remarkable opportunity for an aspiring Research Assistant to contribute to cutting-edge research at the forefront of neurology and infectious diseases. As a key member of the Transmissible Neurodegeneration Laboratory at the prestigious Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, you will collaborate with esteemed experts like Associate Professor Victoria Lawson and Dr Julie McAuley. This role offers a unique chance to delve into the crucial realm of predicting the neurological impact of SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern through a combination of in vitro and in vivo studies. Join our dynamic team to explore the intricate interplay between virology, neuroscience, and clinical application, while honing your skills in experimental design, data analysis, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Your responsibilities will include:
4. Contribute to the design, development and execution of the laboratory’s program of research on SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 pathogenesis.
5. Independently plan and carry out experiments focused on completion of research project aims to meet agreed timelines and milestones.
6. Perform relevant laboratory techniques including cell culture, virus isolation, plasmid-based gene cloning, site-specific mutagenesis, RNA and DNA transfection, animal studies, RT-PCR and sequencing, Western immunoblot, ELISA, histology, immunohistochemistry and fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry.
Who We Are Looking For
You possess exceptional organisational skills, taking initiative in creative problem-solving. Your demonstrated ability to handle administrative lab duties and grow research expertise with autonomy sets you apart. Eager to learn technical skills, you communicate effectively in both writing and speech.
You will also have:
7. Completion of a BSc (Honours) or BBMed (Honours) degree in relevant biomedical area (pathology, virology, neuroscience).
8. Proven ability to work with senior researchers and help design, perform and analyse experiments in a timely manner.
9. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a research team and interact in a courteous and effective manner with academic, administrative and support staff
