Visiting Medical Officer 2 Positions (Until 30 June 2027)

Successful applicants will be expected to participate in the Ophthalmology clinics perform operative procedures required to an appropriate standard be involved in the supervision of registrars and residents and be involved in teaching and education.

Appointees may be eligible for credentialing and privileging across all other facilities in the Western Sydney Local Health District.

The Department of Ophthalmology at Westmead is a multidisciplinary service providing outpatient and inpatient assessment services ophthalmic surgical services and community based chronic care management. The multidisciplinary team is constructed of Medical Nursing Allied Health (Orthoptic) Administrative Community based & Managerial staff to allow the service to be a successful high demand service seeing approximately 28000 Outpatient occasions of service 2000 Surgical occasions of service and 700 Community based occasions of services per year.

The outpatient ophthalmology service sees patients with acute chronic and emergency eye conditions. The service performs routine and emergency eye surgery and offers a 24 / 7 on call system for Westmead Hospital. Vitreo-retinal services include but are not limited to management of : retinal detachment endophthalmitis diabetic retinopathy ocular trauma macular hole epiretinal membrane vitreous haemorrhage and lens and IOL complications.


ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT

1. Possess registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable).
2. Sound clinical knowledge in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery including completion of at least 1 year of Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Fellowship.

Applicants must have Australian Fellowship / Specialist Registration

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Health Services Act 1997 and Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Sessional Contracts) Determination 2014.


Selection Criteria

1. Qualifications and credentials required for core scope of practice in the specialty.
o Possess registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997.
o Sound clinical knowledge in Ophthalmology and Vitreo-Retinal surgery demonstrated through completion of at least 1 year of Vitreo-Retinal Fellowship.
o Medical Retina Fellowship training is considered beneficial.
o Experience working as a Vitreoretinal Surgeon at a consultant level in an Australian Public Hospital is considered beneficial.
o Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based practice.
o Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision.
o Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic applied or clinical research within the Department.
2. Evidence of additional qualifications skills and / or experience required for specific scope of practice for the specialty.
3. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including :
o Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
o Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.
o Excellent organisational supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.
o Maintaining and developing knowledge skills and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice.
o Involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality.
4. Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system.
5. Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by :
o Systems thinking and risk-taking aptitude.
o Commitment to self-care and personal development.
o Capacity to maintain personal integrity tolerate stress and demonstrate resilience.
o Commitment to building relationships leading and developing others.
o Results and outcome focused.
6. Commitment to good governance achieving results and managing risks.
7. Demonstrated commitment to Education Training and Research as applicable to the position.
