Bankwest's Technology Division develops and executes all technical change within the organisation, leveraging technology to deliver the Bankwest strategy. The Division works on a wide variety of technologies and projects with the support of a dedicated team in an Agile methodology. Our team is responsible for the application of technology and operations across every aspect of the bank – from product platforms for our customers to essential internal tools.
The principal engineer role reports directly to the Crew Tech Lead for Seamless Lending Crew and Resilient Lending Crew, leading and driving the technology roadmap to support Bankwest's vision of becoming Australia's favourite digital bank.
Our mission is to create seamless, intuitive, and fully integrated lending experiences that reduce time and effort for brokers and customers—powered by innovative solutions and AI-driven insights that streamline decisions, simplify processes, and transform lending.
You will provide core technology and domain expertise to inform technical strategy and be responsible for designing solutions for complex challenges within a business unit. A strong risk mindset and a security-first approach are essential. You will also foster a culture of engineering excellence and innovation, working with top engineers and AI experts to leverage emerging AI technologies to enhance productivity and happiness.
We're interested in hearing from people who :
* Possess full-cycle engineering experience: ideation, technical design, build, testing, release, and maintenance.
* Design and implement innovative technical solutions to complex problems, including onboarding, migration, and system cleanup.
* Have a proven track record in developing large-scale digital applications with modern technology stacks.
* Provide engineering leadership for Bankwest's Seamless Lending and Resilient Lending Crews, including software, systems, quality, and reliability.
* Design technology solutions that meet high standards of quality, security, performance, and maintainability.
* Drive automation practices and the DevSecOps journey within the teams.
* Be well-versed in solution architecture, technology blueprints, engineering roadmaps, and translating project visions into actionable plans.
* Actively embrace and integrate AI-driven solutions (including LLMs and agentic AI approaches) to improve workflows and product capabilities.
* Exhibit strategic thinking and define long-term technical directions for teams and organizations.
* Possess strong mentoring and leadership skills, with a passion for upskilling engineers and fostering innovation.
* Influence cross-functional teams, articulate trade-offs, and align technical decisions with business goals.
Tech Skills :
We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. Experience or exposure to some of these will be beneficial :
* Proven experience leading large-scale, complex engineering initiatives using Java, .NET, JavaScript frameworks.
* Deep knowledge of architectural patterns, cloud-native solutions on AWS & Azure, microservices, integration, and containerization.
* Expertise in full-cycle engineering with modern DevSecOps practices, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and CI/CD tools.
* Understanding of AI / ML technologies, including Generative AI (GPT, AWS BedRock, SageMaker, Cline, Cursor).
