Overview

Hervey Bay State High School is seeking a dedicated and culturally knowledgeable Community Education Counsellor (Identified) to support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families. In this important role, you will provide educational counselling and support services to ensure the best possible outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, students, families, and communities. You will also play a key role in strengthening cultural understanding by delivering cross-cultural awareness training to the broader school community.

About The School

Hervey Bay State High School is a dynamic co-educational school offering a broad and inclusive curriculum from Years 7 to 12. Our programs include marine studies, ICT, agricultural science, vocational education, traineeships, apprenticeships, and first-year university subjects through the University of Southern Queensland, alongside the full range of traditional subjects. Our experienced teaching staff are supported by a dedicated welfare team, working in partnership with students and families to support successful transitions into further education, training, or employment. Your Responsibilities

As the Community Education Counsellor (Identified), your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

* Pastoral care (assist in building positive relationships)
* Improve student\'s wellbeing by providing a link between home and the school
* Facilitating the growth of a positive cultural identity by organising and conducting cultural programs and assisting teaches
* Integrating a positive cultural identity into a wider multicultural society
* Assist with extra-curricular and co-curricular activities for students, parents and families
* Working with parents, students and teachers to resolve issues/concerns
* Assist students in the transition from school to school; from school to work and from school to further education

The overall aim of this role is to assist all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to improve their academic outcomes and become more informed and active citizens.

Mandatory Requirements For an Identified Role

It is a genuine occupational requirement for Identified roles that the position be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as set out in Section 7 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1991 for the purposes contained in Section 25 of that Act.


Verification of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage

For administrative purposes, in relation to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is either:

* Of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
* Accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.

By definition a person who is not an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cannot be employed (on any basis) to perform the duties of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.

Applicants to this position may have to provide confirmation of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage. Requesting proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage from applicants helps to make sure that this intention is honoured.
