The Opportunity We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Concept / Mechanical Engineer to join our Infrastructure Delivery team on a full‑time, permanent basis. Reporting to the Manager Development Engineering, you will play a key role in shaping the early‑stage (FEL1/FEL2) development of APA’s gas infrastructure projects in a front‑end, concept‑focused capacity. This is not a traditional detailed engineering role. Success in this position comes from your ability to work in ambiguity, generate and test ideas, and define practical, fit‑for‑purpose engineering solutions before they progress into delivery.
You will develop and assess high‑level gas transmission infrastructure and pipeline concepts, screen technical options, and establish the foundations for major infrastructure decisions, ensuring solutions are safe, viable and aligned to business objectives.
Location: Brisbane or Melbourne, with flexible and hybrid working options.
Key Responsibilities
Lead development of concept and feasibility solutions (FEL1/FEL2) for gas infrastructure projects (pipelines, compression, storage)
Translate customer requirements and business constraints into practical, high‑level engineering concepts
Rapidly generate multiple solution concepts, systematically evaluate them, and converge on the most viable pathway through stage‑gate approvals
Conduct concept‑level assessments and trade studies to inform key project and investment decisions
Deliver clear, concise front‑end reports outlining options, risks and recommendations
Collaborate across disciplines to solve complex, early‑stage engineering challenges and support project shaping
Qualifications
Background in oil & gas / energy, with exposure to concept, feasibility or FEED work
Proven ability to operate effectively in high ambiguity environments where information is incomplete, using engineering judgement to progress decisions
Strong skills in optioneering, problem solving and technical decision‑making
Hands‑on mindset – a doer who actively contributes, not just reviews
Ability to think laterally, challenge assumptions, and explore innovative solutions
Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to clearly articulate ideas and recommendations
Desirable: Experience in gas pipeline transmission systems
Benefits We offer competitive remuneration, employee benefits, flexible working arrangements, and wellbeing initiatives.
