Position Objective
The purpose of this role is to deliver culturally safe, trauma-informed mental health and wellbeing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members affected by trauma, including family violence.
The position plays a key role in reducing waiting times for Aboriginal people in southern Tasmania and improving access to timely, compassionate, holistic support.
Responsibilities
1. Direct Client Work
Provide individual counselling, psycho-education and therapeutic interventions through a trauma-informed and culturally responsive lens.
Work collaboratively with adults to identify needs, goals and preferences and develop care plans that promote recovery and healing.
Support clients to develop and implement safety plans, identify risk factors and strengthen protective strategies.
Work closely with Karadi's Our Path Home Team and other internal programs to ensure a coordinated, wrap-around response to client needs.
Maintain strong referral and care pathways with mainstream and Aboriginal community-controlled services (e.g., GPs, SASS, mental health services, Child Safety, Tasmania Police).
Participate in multidisciplinary case review meetings and contribute to collaborative care planning.
With informed consent, liaise with relevant agencies to ensure continuity of care and safety for clients and families.
3. Documentation & Reporting
Record accurate and comprehensive client information in Karadi's electronic health record system.
Prepare reports aligned with program deliverables and funding Key Performance Indicators.
Maintain strong case notes, records management and confidentiality in line with organisational policy.
4. Professional Practice & Development
Engage in regular clinical supervision with a suitably qualified senior practitioner.
Participate in ongoing professional development and reflective practice to strengthen trauma-informed and evidence-based care.
Deliver and/or participate in community and staff education sessions on trauma-informed care and the impacts of family violence.
Contribute to continuous quality improvement and clinical governance processes across Karadi's health and wellbeing programs.
Uphold Karadi's workplace health and safety, cultural safety and service excellence frameworks.
Hold and maintain relevant professional registration at all times during employment.
Qualifications and competencies
Tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience providing therapeutic interventions for trauma and/or family, violence (e.g., EMDR, CBT, ACT or narrative therapy).
Minimum 3–5 years' experience supporting clients impacted by trauma, family violence and complex social needs.
Proven ability to engage respectfully and build rapport with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Strong records management, report writing, and case notetaking.
Maintain current knowledge of emerging evidence-based best practice in family, domestic and sexual violence.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office 365 Suite.
Current National Police Check.
Valid Working with Vulnerable People Card.
Current Driver Licence.
Currently hold or have the ability to obtain registration or membership with AHPRA, AASW, ACA, PACFA or equivalent professional body.
Current First Aid Certificate.
Selection Criteria
Demonstrated ability to provide culturally safe, trauma-informed care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of health and their impact on Aboriginal communities in Tasmania.
Capacity for reflective practice and professional growth, including participation in supervision and learning.
Proven ability to deliver therapeutic support to individuals and families affected by trauma and/or family violence.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, including partnership with internal teams (e.g., Our Path Home) and external services (e.g., Tas Police, Child Safety, TALS).
Demonstrated professionalism, integrity and confidentiality in managing sensitive client information.
Understanding of clinical governance and continuous quality improvement within community-based health settings.
