Purpose of the Role

The Mechanical Design Engineer will work alongside industry-leading engineers and scientists within our global research and development team. In this role, you will provide engineering leadership to develop and pursue research to advance manufacturing technology and ensure sustainable business growth. This position requires a motivated, agile, performance-driven individual to lead the modeling, simulation, and advanced fabrication to create new products across many processes.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead Design Technology projects from concept to commissioning.
- Drive Innovation of existing processes and operations in the manufacturing plants.
- Demonstrate sound problem-solving ability and a hands-on approach to develop fundamental process knowledge.
- Deliver presentations and make recommendations to the R&D; Senior Leadership team based on strong scientific experimentation and data analysis.
- Develop structures and mechanisms to solve customer challenges, and see these elements through build, test, integration, and operation.
- Collaborate effectively with manufacturing personnel, vendors, and suppliers to build an understanding of opportunity areas for improvement.
- Conduct technology scans and gather insights to progress foundational knowledge in key technology areas.
- Apply highly specialized knowledge of engineering principles and practices specifically to lead the creation and development of new machinery designs from prototype to production considering application, cost, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability.
- Use experience with component selection in working directly with suppliers to ensure their parts meet system requirements.
- Lead and provide on-the-floor analytical decisions based on the immediate outcomes of the trial and prepare a report for the final trial outcomes.
- Coach and mentor junior engineers and scientists, sharing expertise and information with others.
- Work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment.
- Ensure that operations are in line with Work Health and Safety Requirements at all times. Report any incidents, hazards, near misses, or 'at-risk' behaviors in a timely fashion.
- Comply with any reasonable request related to health and safety, including attending health and safety-related training, participating in health and safety initiatives/activities, and ensuring that either your acts or omissions do not place any person at risk.
- Respond to any hazard or incident that is raised by another team member and provide or seek the support required to allow them to work safely and respond to the identified workplace issue.

Ideal Candidate

- Australian work authorization is required for this position.
- Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to develop engineering solutions from first principles.
- Ability to conceptualize and develop mechanical designs.
- Solid mechanical and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated hands-on approach with rapid prototyping and problem-solving.
- Solid interpersonal and oral/written communication skills with the ability to relate well and cooperate with people at all levels.
- Advanced skills with the standard features of the MS Office Suite, including SharePoint and Microsoft Project.

- Knowledge:

- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a similar discipline.
- Materials Engineering – Ideally in Metal or a similar discipline.
- Essential requirement for Materials Engineering knowledge, particularly in metals or similar disciplines.
- Possesses a strong network of external manufacturing-related specialists.
- Strong understanding of the Innovation process development strongly desired.

- Experience:

- Preferred 7+ years relevant experience or equivalent in a design and engineering environment.
- Experience in Manufacturing improvement and implementation projects.
- Experience working with Engineering partners and fabrication vendors.
- Strong engineering experience in mechanical systems such as mechanism, thermal, or structural design and application to the design process.
- Demonstrated experience in process design, operation, commissioning, and installation of process equipment, including pilot lines.
- Proficiency in any of the following software: Autodesk CAD tools (Ideally Inventor) and Minitab (Beneficial).
- Specific proficiency in Inventor CAD software is required.
