Primary objective
You will provide regional leadership and coordination for a comprehensive prevention and early intervention effort across Central
Australia, with a focus on primordial and primary prevention. This involves partnering and coordinating with government agencies, the
Aboriginal Community Controlled sector, local government, and NGOs to reduce the impact of chronic preventable conditions - including
diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer - on the population and the health system.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with government agencies, the Aboriginal Community Controlled sector, local
government, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
2. Support the local prevention governance group to plan, coordinate, facilitate and lead local community-based prevention investment
and activity across Central Australia, including ensuring local communities are engaged in decision-making.
3. Analyse data and evidence to ensure local decision-making is evidence informed.
4. Create and contribute to a culture of innovation, allowing people/teams to take managed risks to continuously find ways to improve
implementation.
5. Contribute to strengthening the local prevention system by identifying opportunities, gaps and emerging issues and responding
appropriately.
6. Work closely with the Regional Executive Director NT Health and other local leaders to strengthen leadership for prevention across
NT Health, the health sector and government agencies.
7. Monitor prevention activities and outcomes and report to the governance group, NT Health, and communities.
8. Share developments and learnings with Territory wide networks to build capacity for preventive health in the NT.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven expertise and experience in prevention and health promotion.
2. Demonstrated experience working in remote Aboriginal communities and/or a highly developed understanding of the major issues
affecting Aboriginal people living in remote communities.
3. Strong collaborative skills and a demonstrated ability to establish and sustain productive working relationships and strategic alliances
across agencies.
4. Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically and work independently with limited supervision.
5. Excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate well with a range of stakeholders at various levels – including
CEOs, Senior Executives, and community stakeholders.
6. Demonstrated understanding of key principles and frameworks that guide contemporary prevention, including systems approaches
and collective impact.
7. Knowledge and understanding of the drivers of non-communicable disease in regional, remote, and urban areas.
Desirable
1. Experience and understanding of issues and stakeholders in the Central Australia region.
2. Bachelor/Post Graduate qualification in Public Health, or a related discipline.
