Visiting Medical Officer in Acute General Medicine – John Hunter Hospital. Temp fixed term until June 2027.
John Hunter Hospital is the largest hospital in the Hunter Recent England Local Health District with approximately 650 beds. It is a Level 6, tertiary referral, major trauma and teaching hospital serving a population of 800,000+. The hospital has strong connections with Hunter Medical Research Institute and the University of Newcastle.
About MACU
The MACU is a high-acuity, short-stay unit designed to:
- Rapidly assess and manage patients presenting with acute medical conditions.
- Streamline admission and discharge processes.
- Reduce pressure on the Emergency Department (ED) and inpatient wards.
It serves as a gateway between the ED and inpatient medical teams, focusing on early diagnostics, multidisciplinary care, and timely decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Acute patient assessment: Rapid evaluation of undifferentiated medical presentations.
- Clinical decision-making: Determining admission, discharge, or transfer to specialty units.
- Team leadership: Supervising junior doctors, coordinating with nursing staff, and liaising with allied health professionals.
- Multidisciplinary collaboration: Working with ED, radiology, pathology, and specialty teams.
- Teaching and mentoring: Supporting medical education for junior medical officers (JMOs) and registrars.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A primary medical degree registered with AHPRA and General Medicine Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.
- Recent and comprehensive experience in Acute General Medicine and in a tertiary-level MACU team.
- Experience in or knowledge of programs for improving the organisation and delivery of care in Acute General Medicine.
