Recovery at Work Coordinator

At Wollongong City Council, we continuously strive to create an Extraordinary Wollongong. We focus on the delivery of exceptional services, infrastructure and facilities for our community.

This is a full‐time term contract position to cover parental leave until July 2027 with the possibility of extension. Salary from: $97,641 up to $112,841 per annum plus superannuation (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications).

The opportunity

This is a meaningful opportunity to play a pivotal role in supporting injured employees as they make a safe and confident return to work. You'll coordinate medical case conferences, develop tailored Recovery at Work plans, and work collaboratively with doctors, supervisors and our in‐house workers compensation team to achieve positive and timely outcomes.

You manage a dynamic mix of cases, including negotiating suitable duties, navigating complex injuries, and supporting employees across a wide range of work environments, including seasonal and casual staff. You bring professionalism and sound judgement to more sensitive matters such as redeployment processes.

A key part of this role is working closely with our WHS and People & Culture teams, supported by Council's self‐insured model, which gives you greater autonomy, visibility and influence than is typical in a standard return‐to‐work role. You'll be involved in collaborative problem‐solving, proactive injury prevention initiatives, and organisation‐wide wellbeing improvements.

With varied work, regular external appointments and opportunities to problem‐solve on the spot, this role offers a rewarding blend of challenge, impact and professional growth.

How You'll Make a Difference

In this role, you'll make a meaningful impact by guiding employees through safe, supportive and timely recovery pathways after injury or illness. You'll coordinate early intervention, manage the full case lifecycle and provide clear, practical advice that helps employees return confidently to meaningful work.

By identifying barriers early and developing well‐considered Recovery at Work plans, you'll shape a positive and care‐focused experience for both physical and psychological injuries.

What makes this opportunity stand out is the unique chance to work within a self‐insured organisation – a setting that gives you deeper involvement, greater autonomy and a broader scope than is typical in most return‐to‐work roles. You'll work closely with WHS, Employment Relations and People & Culture to influence safe work practices, support decision‐making on complex matters and contribute to proactive initiatives that improve employee wellbeing. From education and early‐intervention programs to ergonomic assessments and collaborative planning, your work will help build a safer, healthier and more supportive workplace for everyone.

About You

You hold a relevant Allied Health tertiary qualification, such as Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Occupational Therapy, Psychology or Rehabilitation Counselling, and have completed the SIRA Recovery at Work Coordinator Module. You have experience using Injury Management software (such as SolvInjury) and hold a valid Class C driver's licence.

You have substantial experience in workers' compensation or injury management and are confident managing a varied caseload with minimal supervision. You're skilled in case management, including coordinating medical case conferences, navigating complex claims and supporting stakeholders through challenging situations. You think on your feet, negotiate effectively, and can manage difficult scenarios.

You're comfortable working with multiple stakeholders, have exposure to industrial relations, and understand the importance of timing, communication and collaboration in sensitive matters like redeployment. You have a solutions‐focused mindset, able to think outside the box to find safe and meaningful duties for employees. Adaptable, professional and tech‐savvy, you thrive in a dynamic environment where your expertise genuinely makes an impact.
