GROUP SAFETY MANAGER

Role Profile

Position objective: In this role, the incumbent will identify opportunities for safety improvement across the Bundaberg Sugar Group business units, and lead the implementation of safety practices and processes to drive improved safety outcomes.

Reports to: General Manager, Operations & Sustainability

Direct reports: Safety Compliance and Training Officer


Key Responsibilities

* Plan, organise and implement WHS strategies to meet the agreed safety targets
* Undertake rehabilitation officer duties and assist with the correlation of data for injury claims
* Develop and implement plans, in consultation with stakeholders, to maintain a safe working environment
* Monitor safety performance against established targets
* Manage and implement the Company's Drug and Alcohol Policy
* Provide up-to-date advice in relation to WHS matters
* Interpret and actively implement Health and Safety legislation, Advisory Standards and relevant Industry Codes of Practice
* Ensure Company safety rules and procedures are communicated to all site attendees and implement corrective action where gaps are identified
* Through strategic planning (site safety plans) ensure processes are in place to enable all site personnel to receive adequate training and hold appropriate certification for the tasks performed


WorkCover and Injury Management

* Manage all aspects of WorkCover claim management, policy management and return to work
* Maintain positive relationships with WorkCover Claims Representatives and Management, ensuring policy-affecting decisions are reasonable and based on accurate information
* Liaise with medical providers to ensure timely appointments for claimants
* Meet with medical providers regularly regarding operational requirements and suitable duties across the Group
* Attend medical appointments with injured workers and create/maintain suitable duties plans
* Liaise with Payroll to ensure data required by WorkCover are provided promptly to avoid financial disadvantage to injured workers
* Register insurance claims (plant and equipment) and coordinate repairs
* Provide advice to the Group on legislative changes and compliance requirements
* Gather and validate injury and incident statistics
* Assist with health monitoring where required (organophosphates, lead, audiology, etc.)


Drug and Alcohol Testing

* Conduct Drug and Alcohol testing across the group in accordance with BSL Fit for Work Policy
* Manage secondary testing where required
* Order test stock and maintain calibration of equipment


Safety System

* Maintain and administer computerised safety suite;
* Point of contact for users
* Troubleshooting
* Checking and approval of Contractors in Contractor Management Section
* Data entry when required


PPE Management

* Act as point of contact for the local PPE supplier
* Periodically review contract/pricing
* Review PPE for operational suitability
* Assist Mill, Refinery, Farms and BWEL with custom PPE requirements and solutions


Training and Assessment

* Provide training and assessment support to the Group where required
* Perform Verification of Competency (VOC) assessments


Documentation and Statutory Reporting

* Manage Group Safety documents and review/update as required with stakeholder input
* Submit statutory records and reports to relevant government agencies
* Manifest quantity workplace submissions
* Critical defect listings
* Responses to improvement/prohibition notices
* Ensure business units submit annual safety plans that comply with Group strategies
* Actively lead and participate in the development and implementation of Company safety initiatives and objectives
* Comply with statutory requirements and Company policies, rules and procedures, including WHS, HR, Environment and Quality


General Safety Management

Required Experience and Skills

* Tertiary degree in the area of Workplace Health and Safety
* Some practical work experience within a sugar milling or manufacturing environment desirable
