About Us

We create thriving places and connected communities. We plan, build and maintain Victoria's transport, planning and land services. We are committed to a safe, inclusive and high-performing workplace.

About The Role

The Principal Solicitor is a senior legal specialist responsible for resolving complex and sensitive land registration matters, exercising statutory powers as an Assistant Registrar of Titles, and providing expert advice to the Registrar. The role leads high-risk casework, informs policy and legislative reform, manages a team, and helps maintain the integrity of Victoria's land register and property market.

The role requires high-level specialist expertise to manage complex, sensitive and contentious matters, using strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills. Key responsibilities include providing authoritative advice, addressing emerging strategic issues, and advising senior leaders on policy and operational solutions. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgement, strategic thinking, and the ability to influence outcomes in a complex environment.

What we're looking for (Selection Criteria)

* Demonstrated ability to provide expert legal advice and resolve complex statutory interpretation matters with sound judgement and technical expertise.
* Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and provide strategic advice to senior stakeholders.
* Proven critical thinking and problem‐solving capability, delivering practical solutions to complex issues while considering broader business impacts.
* Excellent stakeholder management skills, with experience navigating competing interests and achieving positive outcomes through collaboration and negotiation.
* Resilient and customer‐focused, with the ability to lead through challenges, manage risks, and drive continuous improvement in service delivery.

Qualifications and Experience

* Qualified legal practitioner admitted, or eligible for admission, as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria.
* Strong knowledge of Victorian land registration, conveyancing, and property legislation, including electronic conveyancing frameworks and regulatory requirements.
* Demonstrated post‐admission legal experience (ideally 5+ years) in property, land registration, conveyancing, or related legal practice.

Pre‐employment checks and employment conditions

Relevant pre‐employment screening and reference checks will be required.

Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa necessary for the nature of the position.

Recipients of Victorian Public Service (VPS) voluntary departure packages should note that re‐employment restrictions apply.

Application deadline

Applications close at 11:59pm on Monday, 27th of July 2026.
