Overview
Primary objectiveTo ensure the Library and Archives NT collections are well-managed, documented, preserved, and accessible through effectiveacquisition, cataloguing, description, storage, and preservation practices that meet professional standards. To work collaborativelyacross the Collections and Content team to support the management and development of both print and digital collections.
Context statementLibrary and Archives NT are the is the premier public research library and archival organisation of the Northern Territory, dedicatedto creating connections with and for communities, and serving as a trusted steward of Territory memory and history. Its collectionsinclude NT Government archives, books, newspapers, photographs, maps, magazines, ephemera, websites, letters, diaries,community and organisational records, and oral histories.Library and Archives NT are a branch of the Northern Territory Government's Department of People, Sport, and Culture.
Key duties and responsibilities
* Ensure Library and Archives NT collections are accurately described to professional standards using cataloguing standards, metadata practices and maintain efficient data flows between systems.
* Develop, review, and maintain policies, processes, and workflow documentation relating to cataloguing, metadata, and overall collection management.
* Provide expert advice on cataloguing and metadata practice, storage, preservation and National eDeposit, and to support strategic planning and collection management directions.
* Manage the storage and preservation of physical and digital collections, including onsite and offsite facilities, to ensure long-term conservation and access.
* Oversee the procurement of library resources for Library and Archives NT and public libraries, including monographs and journals in both print and digital formats, and provide professional advice for library materials tenders and stakeholders.
* Monitor, analyse, and report on collections expenditure to ensure accountability and effective budget management.
* Plan and project manage collection moves, stock-taking, weeding, and collection audits.
* Lead the Collection Management team by allocating responsibilities, empowering staff, and establishing workflows to optimise technical operations.
Selection criteria
Essential
* Degree in library and information science with eligibility for Associate Membership of ALIA.
* Extensive knowledge of collection management practices, including acquisition, cataloguing, processing, and preservation.
* In-depth knowledge and experience with cataloguing and metadata standards and tools, including RDA, DDC, LCSH, DC and controlled vocabularies.
* Extensive knowledge of Library Management Systems and awareness of emerging collection technologies.
* Demonstrated experience in managing collections and facilities, including storage, building management, disaster preparedness, recovery and conservation practices.
* Sound knowledge of copyright and legal deposit legislation relevant to library and archival collections.
* Knowledge of procurement processes, including tendering, contracts, and budgeting.
* Proven leadership and people management skills, including experience in building effective teams.
* Strong project management skills, high-level written and good verbal communication abilities.
Desirable
* Knowledge of Northern Territory and Australian history and culture relevant to collection management.
* Experience in, or knowledge of contemporary practices in public and community or state equivalent library service provision.
