Overview
Regional Group Australia has over 40 quarries across eastern Australia and is continually expanding into key growth regions. The Quarry Geologist/Mining Engineer will play a vital part in managing the company’s natural resources and ensuring our quarry operations run efficiently and safely. You will be responsible for undertaking quarry exploration activities; geological modelling and interpretation; material quality evaluation; reviewing and updating the Company’s rock reserves and resources for each site; providing mine planning and design services to our operations teams; and supporting on the management of geotechnical risks at our quarries.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and manage quarry exploration programmes utilising internal and external capabilities
- Supervise drilling campaigns and undertake geological logging and sampling to update our understanding of subsurface conditions
- Review data to produce geological models for sites, evaluate rock quality and potential risks, plan and arrange sample testing, and provide expert advice on mineral quality to operations teams
- Collaborate with Quarry Managers to provide quarry design and mine planning services to ensure our sites are operating safely, efficiently, sustainably and in compliance with development consent conditions
- Update and maintain the geological and spatial data for our sites.
- Undertake reserve and resource assessments; update and maintain the Company’s reserves and resources ledger
- Undertake geotechnical inspections, audits and slope stability assessments to identify geotechnical risks and provide advice on the management of geotechnical risks to Operations teams.
- Provide geotechnical and quarry development advice to Operations teams and the wider Maas Group business as required.
Required Skills
The following skills are essential:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, Mine Engineering or other closely-related discipline
- Minimum 2 years of experience working in the surface extractive industries (quarrying or mining)
- Experience with GIS applications (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS)
- Competent in the use of common Office software applications
- Valid and current Class C driving licence
- Numerical, analytical, problem solving and observation skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work within a team environment.
Desirable Skills
- Experience of geological mapping, core logging and the description of rocks & soils to AS 1726
- Experience working with near-surface geophysical exploration data
- Familiarity with common construction material standards, e.g. AS 1141, TfNSW, TMR, VicRoads
- Geological modelling using standard industry software (e.g. Leapfrog, Surpac)
- A strong understanding of surface mining techniques and mine planning concepts
- Knowledge of soil & rock mechanics, geotechnical design and slope stability assessments
- Experience with Rocscience or other common slope stability analysis software.
- Familiarity with surveying techniques and working with survey & topographic data.
