Job description
Where good people build communities, shoulder to shoulder.
At AMSA, the work doesn’t start with a strategy deck. It starts with a conversation.
Sometimes that’s in the office. Sometimes it’s in a shed over a cuppa. And sometimes it’s hearing a story that reminds you why this work matters in the first place.
We’re the national body supporting over 1,300 Men’s & Community Sheds across Australia — improving connection, wellbeing and lives in real, practical ways.
Right now, we’re entering a new phase. With significant Federal Government investment in men’s health and growing national attention on the role of Men’s & Community Sheds, we’re expanding how we tell our story, and how we show our impact.
This is a newly designed role at the centre of that shift.
The role
As Communications & Impact Manager, you’ll lead how AMSA shows up across media, digital, partnerships and storytelling. You’ll connect the dots between what’s happening in sheds on the ground and how that story is understood nationally.
You’ll oversee the Communications & Impact function, working closely with the Executive and leading a small team across content, PR, digital and partnerships.
At its core, the role is about clarity, consistency and connection. You’ll be making sure everything we say and share reflects the real value of the Men’s Shed movement.
The details
* 4 days per week (30 hours)
* Hybrid working arrangement
* Newcastle-based (with some travel)
* Competitive salary with NFP salary packaging available
Your impact
Your work will shape how a national movement is seen, understood and supported.
You’ll amplify the voice and value of Men’s Sheds through strategic communications, visibility and storytelling to help ensure the work happening in communities is recognised and understood across Australia.
* Help Men’s Sheds (members) feel informed, connected and proud.
* Help partners and stakeholders see the impact clearly.
* Turn real, human stories into something that drives awareness, engagement and support.
We want storytelling with substance that is grounded in people, backed by outcomes, and connected to real change.
What you’ll be doing
* Leading and coordinating communications across all channels
* Shaping clear, consistent messaging across programs, partnerships and national initiatives
* Overseeing storytelling and impact reporting by bringing together data, stories and outcomes
* Guiding media engagement, visibility and reputation
* Working with partners to ensure meaningful, high-quality visibility and engagement
* Leading and supporting a small, capable team to deliver high-quality work
You won’t be doing everything yourself, but you’ll make sure it all fits together and be willing to get your hands dirty.
What we’re looking for
You’re a storyteller with a sharp eye.
You can see the individual story — the bloke in the shed, the moment that matters — and also zoom out to understand the bigger picture: what it means, why it matters, and how to communicate it well.
You might come from communications, PR, media, marketing (or a mix of all four), with a tertiary qualification or equivalent experience. You’ve likely worked across multiple channels, managed competing priorities, and know how to bring clarity to complexity.
Just as importantly, you’re someone who:
* Writes well, thinks clearly and knows how to land a message
* Can lead a function without needing to control every detail
* Builds strong relationships and knows how to work across teams
* Is comfortable in a small, hands-on organisation where everyone pitches in
* Cares about impact, not just outputs
Experience in the NFP, men’s health and/or community sector is a plus, but not essential.
Why AMSA?
Flexibility that works for life
We trust people to manage their time, focus on outcomes, and get the job done.
A team that shows up
We’re a small team with plenty of banter, where everyone pitching in. We back each other and get things done together.
Purpose you can feel
This isn’t abstract impact. You’ll see it in sheds, in conversations, and in communities across the country.
A role you can shape
This is a newly defined role in a growing organisation. There’s real opportunity to build, improve and make it your own.
Interested?
If you’re someone who prefers a conversation over a keyboard, and wants to work where community actually happens, we’d love to hear from you.
You will need to:
* Submit your CV with a Cover Letter via the application portal
* Hold a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) (or willingness to obtain)
* Be prepared to undergo a National Police Check prior to commencement
* Hold an unrestricted Australian driver’s licence and be willing to drive
