Mount Isa Mines is currently seeking a professional Metallurgist to join the Copper Smelter Metallurgy Team. This position is a fulltime, permanent residentially based position in Mount Isa.

The Role

Reporting to the Superintendent - Metallurgy, this position is responsible for creating and controlling the daily feed blend to the ISASMELT, through effective on-site management of concentrate blending and stockpile control once material has arrived at the smelter.

You will manage multiple internal and third-party concentrates, converting variable stockpiles into a stable, compliant and optimised furnace feed. The ISASMELT operates with tight slag, operating, hygiene and environmental limits and this role requires disciplined, real-time decision-making to manage variability, stock movements and reclaim to protect furnace stability, refractory integrity and downstream systems.

This position is a permanent residential role, on a standard 5/2/4/3 roster configuration.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Daily preparation and optimisation of smelter feed blendsManagement of stockpiles, dome capacity and reclaim sequencingTracking concentrate movements from receival through to furnace feedBlending to maintain compliance with smelting, environmental and hygiene constraintsProactive management of feed variability and limit exposureMaintaining stock balances and supporting reconciliation processesProviding clear technical guidance to Operations on feed-related performanceSupporting blending trials and continuous improvement initiatives

You will have the following skillset and attributes:

You understand how feed chemistry influences furnace stability, slag behaviour, off-gas performance and operational risk.

You will have:

Degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering or related disciplineStrong Excel and data analysis capabilityExperience interpreting concentrate assays and blending to operating limitsAbility to work effectively across Operations, Planning and LogisticsStrong safety focus and practical problem-solving skills

Advantageous:

Experience in copper smelting or concentrate blendingExperience with thermodynamic or process modelling tools (FactSage, MPE, HSC or similar)Experience working with large datasets (PI, Power BI or similar systems)
