Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced ICT Systems Test Engineer with strong payments domain knowledge, API and data testing skills, and exposure to insurance products and processes. You will design and execute test strategies for complex integration, data and platform changes, ensuring our systems are robust, compliant and high quality expectations.
Key Responsibilities
* Specify, design and maintain test plans, test scenarios and detailed test cases across functional, integration, regression and end-to-end testing.
* Develop and maintain automated and manual tests for APIs, microservices and event-driven integrations (REST/JSON, SOAP/XML, message queues, webhooks).
* Analyse business and technical requirements in payments and insurance domains, identify test conditions and define appropriate acceptance criteria.
* Design and execute data validation tests across data pipelines, warehouses and reporting layers, ensuring data completeness, accuracy, reconciliation and lineage are maintained.
* Test payment processing flows (authorisation, capture, settlement, refunds, chargebacks, reversals), including reconciliation with upstream and downstream systems (core banking, GL, billing, claims).
* Validate integration with payment gateways, schemes and acquirers, including handling of declines, partial approvals, timeouts, retries and idempotency.
* Test insurance policy lifecycle scenarios (quote, bind, issue, endorsement, renewal, cancellation, reinstatement) and claims processing workflows (FNOL, assessment, recovery, settlement, subrogation).
* Perform non-functional testing (basic performance, reliability, failover, security-related test scenarios) in collaboration with infrastructure and security teams.
* Use test management and defect tracking tools to log, track and triage defects, and produce clear defect reports and supporting evidence.
* Contribute to test data management strategies, including creation, masking and maintenance of realistic test data for payments and insurance use cases.
* Participate in system design and architecture reviews, providing testability and quality input early in the lifecycle.
* Collaborate closely with engineers, business analysts, product owners and operations teams to ensure shared understanding of quality risks, priorities and release readiness.
Required Skills and Experience
Technical Skills
* Tertiary qualification in ICT, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent experience consistent with ICT Systems Test Engineer.
* 4+ years of hands-on systems testing experience, including complex integration, API and data testing in enterprise environments.
* Strong understanding of payments domain concepts: card and account-based payments, payment gateways, settlement and clearing, reconciliation, file-based interfaces, and common error/exception patterns.
* Experience in insurance (life or general) across at least some of: policy administration, product configuration, underwriting rules, premium calculation, claims, billing, commissions.
* Proven experience testing REST and SOAP APIs using tools such as Postman, SoapUI, ReadyAPI or equivalent, including contract testing and negative testing.
* Solid SQL skills and experience validating data across relational databases, data warehouses, and/or data lakes, including aggregations, joins and reconciliation queries.
* Experience with at least one test automation framework (e.g. Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, REST-assured, Karate, K6, JMeter) for API and/or UI tests.
* Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Azure DevOps, GitLab, GitHub Actions, Jenkins) and integrating automated tests into build and release processes.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex defects across multiple systems and data sources.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including creating clear test documentation, defect reports and stakeholder updates.
Desirable Skills
* Experience in Australian financial services or insurance markets, including regulatory and compliance considerations (e.g. APRA, ASIC, PCI-DSS awareness for payments).
* Exposure to event-driven architectures and streaming platforms (e.g. Kafka) and testing of event workflows and replay scenarios.
* Experience with data quality and data profiling tools, as well as BI/reporting validation (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, Qlik) as well as SAS & Databricks.
* Knowledge of performance and volume testing for high-throughput payment or insurance transaction systems.
* Experience working in Agile delivery environments (Scrum, Kanban), including participation in stand-ups, refinements, and sprint ceremonies.
