The Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) represents the Traditional Owners of the Groote Archipelago. The ALC is a 'future-forward' Land Council, directed by the 14 clans of the Groote Archipelago region, enabling the Anindilyakwa people to take full advantage of the opportunities and technology available in the 21st century, while simultaneously preserving land, language and culture.

The ALC functions to ascertain and express the wishes and opinions of the Anindilyakwa people as to the management of the land and sea in the Groote archipelago region, protecting the interests of the Traditional Owners, assisting in the protection of sacred sites, assist the Anindilyakwa people in traditional land claims, negotiation with persons desiring to obtain an estate or interest in the land, assist Traditional Owners in carrying out commercial activity, and supervise and provide administrative and other assistance for Land Trusts holding Indigenous land in the Groote archipelago region.

The vision of the ALC is to:

* Protect, maintain and promote Anindilyakwa culture;
* Invest in the present to build a self-sufficient future;
* And, create pathways for youth to stand in both worlds.

About the role

The Senior Accountant is responsible for delivering high‐quality financial reporting, ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, and supporting ALC's overall financial integrity. This role plays a key part in month‐end and year‐end processes, provides accurate reconciliations, and supports both internal and external auditing activities.

Key responsibilities include preparing financial and statutory reports, completing business and income activity statements, performing payroll functions, and maintaining accurate financial records. The Senior Accountant works closely with internal stakeholders and external auditors to ensure all financial obligations are met in a timely and compliant manner.

This role is for an immediate start, 12 months fixed term.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting: Produce accurate financial statements and reports for internal and external use, to meet statutory and regulatory reporting requirements and support informed decision‐making, by analysing financial data, applying accounting standards, and ensuring timely completion.

Reconciliations & Month‐End Processing: Complete reconciliations, month‐end tasks, perform account reconciliations and process month‐end journals to ensure the general ledger is accurate and reflects the organisation's true financial position, by reviewing variances, validating supporting documentation, and following established accounting procedures.

BAS, IAS & FBT Lodgements: prepare and lodge BAS, IAS, and FBT returns, complete all required business, income, and fringe benefit tax documentation, to ensure compliance with ATO regulations and avoid penalties or financial risk, by capturing relevant financial data, reconciling tax-related information, and submitting returns within required deadlines.

Payroll Processing & Reconciliations: Process and review payroll and payroll related reconciliations by verifying payroll master file changes, employee benefit updates, and payroll officer data entry, including superannuation calculations, and acting as back‐up payroll administrator to ensure employees are paid accurately, entitlements are correct, and all legislative and compliance obligations are met.

Year‐End Audit Support: prepare audit schedules and respond to auditor requests, to contribute to a smooth and compliant year‐end audit process, by compiling accurate financial records, providing supporting documentation, and addressing queries promptly.

Ad‐hoc Reports: Prepare high‐quality ad‐hoc reports by analysing and compiling accurate information for regulatory bodies, including the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), to ensure timely, compliant, and transparent responses to requirements such as Questions on Notice and climate‐disclosure‐related obligations.

Systems Implementation: Support the implementation of ERP and payroll systems by preparing system documentation and organising accurate data for migration to ensure smooth system deployment, data integrity, and improved operational efficiency.

Selection Criteria

Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Proven experience in a similar accounting position, ideally with three or more years in a hands‐on financial role involving reporting, reconciliations, and compliance activities.

Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, meet strict deadlines, and contribute to the accuracy and integrity of financial information within a fast‐paced organisational environment.

Strong technical knowledge across core accounting functions, including month‐end close, general ledger maintenance, financial reporting, balance sheet reconciliations, and statutory compliance.

Demonstrated ability to apply accounting standards, interpret financial data, and resolve discrepancies with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Proficiency in Excel (including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis) and experience using accounting platforms such as MYOB and Xero, or large‐scale enterprise financial systems.

Ability to quickly adapt to new systems, streamline processes, and ensure data integrity across multiple platforms.

Experience working within an Indigenous organisation, not‐for‐profit environment, or in an Indigenous community context, with practical understanding of Aboriginal culture, society, and the key issues affecting Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory.

Key Essential Position Requirements

Qualifications – Degree in Accounting.

Pre‐Employment Checks – A National Police Check is required for this position prior to appointment.

Motor Vehicle Licence – A valid C class motor vehicle licence is required for this position.

What's on offer?

Attractive Remuneration: $110,000 per annum, fixed term for 12 months

Annual leave: 5 weeks per annum

Personal leave: 18 days per annum

Salary Sacrifice available (up to $18,500 per year)

2 weeks paid Christmas/New Year shut down - in addition to annual leave

Working Hours, Travel and Location

Work outside standard business hours may be required from time to time to meet operational or organisational needs.

Periodic travel may be required, including travel to various locations to support operational activities, stakeholder engagement, or project delivery.

Ability to work effectively with diverse communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other cultural groups, as well as in remote or regional settings where required.

Adaptability to varied work environments is essential, as duties may involve working in changing, challenging, or unpredictable conditions, including different climates, terrains, or operational contexts.

Travel may involve multiple modes of transport, which may include air, road, or sea travel depending on organisational requirements and work locations.
