Part-time - Bakery Assistant, Cake Decorator Part-time - minimum 24 hours Shifts can include weekend work and early starts Description of position: Job Tasks: Cake Decorator The cake decorator will frequently stand and walk to complete icing, filling, and decorating bakery products. Occasionally, pushing and pulling tiered trolleys is required to bring goods to the decorating area. Items on trays weighing up to 8kg are retrieved from heights between 200mm and 1750mm, with occasional squatting and overhead reaching for low or high trays. Icing and fillings are mixed in a large mixer, with bags of ingredients weighing up to 25kg lifted and carried to the mixer. The mixing bowl, weighing up to 40kg, is team-lifted and tipped into a tub. The icing or filling is then scooped from the tub, requiring repeated stooping, and applied to cakes on the bench. Constant bilateral hand and arm activities are needed to spread fillings, pipe decorative features, and roll cakes to coat edges. Hand activities also include assembling display boxes and labeling containers. Equipment such as slicers and other apparatus are located under the bench, requiring squatting to retrieve. Once finished, items are reloaded onto tiered trolleys, which are pushed to the cool room or display racks. Repeated forward reach and some stooping are necessary to set out items for sale on shelving from 380mm to 1500mm or in chest fridges requiring up to 900mm of forward reach. Overall physical demand level: Heavy work. Employee Exclusion Criteria: Lower back injuries preventing sustained standing for up to 2 hours, frequent walking, lifting up to 25kg, stooping, or pushing/pulling trolleys. Upper limb injuries preventing constant bilateral/unilateral upper limb work, lifting up to 25kg, frequent forward reach, occasional overhead reach, or pushing/pulling trolleys. Lower limb injuries preventing sustained standing, frequent walking, lifting up to 25kg, occasional squatting, or pushing/pulling trolleys. Daily Tasks and Responsibilities: Inspect and reassemble equipment, sanitize, rework display cases, and rotate products. Handle large trays of bakery items, place packages into machines, and follow safety procedures. Set labelers, print, and apply labels to products. Wrap, label, and stock bakery products, and set out items for sale. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards, including cleaning equipment and areas. Perform routine maintenance on machinery and equipment. Clean and sanitize the meat area, coolers, and freezers, and handle waste and laundry. Log sanitation procedures and follow safety protocols. Non-Essential Tasks: Assist with front-end duties and other departmental tasks as needed.
