They manage complex portfolios spanning wholesale electricity, gas trading, environmental certificates, and large commercial and industrial supply operations, supported by sophisticated trading platforms and risk frameworks.
The business is undergoing significant transformation including trading system implementation, risk framework enhancement, and portfolio expansion across energy trading and commercial operations. They are seeking a General Manager to lead risk management, trading operations, and business development across their Australian energy operations. This senior leadership role offers the opportunity to shape operational frameworks, drive transformation initiatives, and partner with front office teams supporting commercial expansion.
The Role
As General Manager - Risk & Trading Operations, you will provide strategic leadership across risk management, trading operations, and business support functions for energy trading and commercial activities. This role requires deep expertise in energy trading environments, proven capability leading operational transformation, and the ability to build trust‑based partnerships with trading and commercial teams whilst maintaining robust operational frameworks.
You will lead market risk, credit risk, and trading operations teams, drive continuous improvement of risk frameworks and trading systems, accelerate ETRM implementation across Australian operations, and ensure operational excellence supporting business development. Working across trading, commercial, finance, and technology functions, you will balance operational control with support for commercial growth during a period of significant transformation.
This is a senior leadership position operating as both strategic business partner and change agent, requiring commercial acumen, stakeholder influence, and operational expertise to deliver results in a fast‑paced, matrixed organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Business Development
* Lead risk management, trading operations, and business support functions across energy trading and commercial operations
* Contribute to energy trading platform development through evaluating and improving operational frameworks supported by robust metrics and controls
* Build trust‑based relationships with front office teams, balancing operational control with commercial development support
* Collaborate with stakeholders to leverage best practice and align operational frameworks
* Drive business growth through operational excellence, system capability, and commercial enablement
* Establish and maintain risk control environment and limits framework for energy trading, commercial operations, and related business units
* Define and deliver risk reporting to committees and stakeholders covering market risk, credit risk, AML/KYC, and liquidity risk
* Develop detailed understanding of risk positions across power, gas, environmental certificates, and carbon markets
* Review and obtain approval for risk mandates annually or as required
* Oversee risk analysis and drive approval processes for large transactions requiring escalated delegations
* Ensure independent benchmarking of parameters used for P&L assessment including market prices, forward curves, and volatility
Trading Operations & Systems
* Lead trading operations, settlements, and back‑office functions supporting front office activities
* Accelerate implementation and adoption of target ETRM systems across Australian operations
* Collaborate with quantitative and risk methodology teams to implement appropriate asset and transaction pricing models
* Support front office, analytics, and asset representation teams to model Australian markets within trading systems
* Drive continuous improvement of operational processes, controls, and reporting requirements
Credit & Counterparty Management
* Oversee credit risk management for wholesale trading counterparties and commercial supply relationships
* Rate counterparties, set credit limits, and negotiate master agreements
* Manage wholesale trading credit risk and commercial & industrial customer credit exposures
* Oversee collateral and margin management arrangements
* Build processes supporting efficient credit assessment for commercial supply growth
* Lead, develop, and mentor high‑performing teams across risk, trading operations, and credit functions
* Act as change agent driving adoption of new systems, processes, and ways of working
* Manage performance through goal setting, continuous feedback, and career development planning
* Build capability across market risk, credit risk, trading operations, and compliance functions
* Foster culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement
Stakeholder Management
* Build and maintain relationships with trading teams, commercial functions, and senior leadership
* Coordinate with finance teams on P&L reporting, accounting, and financial controls
* Engage with technology teams across multiple locations on system implementation and enhancement
* Partner with regulatory and compliance functions on framework maintenance and audit support
Requirements
* 15+ years' experience in energy trading, risk management, or trading operations with at least 8 years in senior leadership roles
* Extensive experience within energy trading environments with deep understanding of power, gas, and environmental commodity markets
* Proven track record leading operational teams and driving business transformation in complex, matrixed organisations
* Experience designing and implementing business governance frameworks and risk structures including mandates, limits, and approval frameworks
* Worked in both mark‑to‑market and accrual accounting environments with familiarity across risk indicators including VaR, stress testing, and scenario analysis
* Strong understanding of energy trading operations, settlements, and back‑office functions
* Experience leading ETRM system implementations or major operational transformation initiatives
* Broad risk expertise spanning market risk, counterparty credit risk, liquidity risk, and AML/KYC compliance
* Substantial experience interacting with front office teams including trading, portfolio management, and commercial functions
* Proven stakeholder management capability working across multiple business units and teams
* Experienced communicating with multiple levels of corporate governance up to executive level
* Strong team leadership, mentoring, and development skills
* Comfortable working in international, matrixed environment with stakeholders from multiple countries and cultures
* Experience with trading and risk management systems and platforms
* Commercial acumen with understanding of business economics and growth drivers
