Primary objective

Responsible for providing culturally appropriate advice, guidance and mentoring to Youth Justice staff and relevant

stakeholders to ensure a culturally safe service delivery, and support young people to maintain connections with family,

culture and community.

Context statement

The Northern Territory youth justice system is an integrated service system that provides young people social, emotional

and wellbeing support; develop education, vocational and life skills; strengthen connection to culture, family, and community;

and address offending behaviour.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Use local and relevant cultural knowledge, which may include local language skills, to support Aboriginal young people

and, assist Youth Justice staff to support Aboriginal young people involved in the youth justice system.

2. Participate and contribute to case management and throughcare planning for young people, inclusive of authoring or,

reviewing reports as required.

3. Develop and implement cultural learning, coaching, training and mentoring that assist staff in providing high level services

to Aboriginal young people and their families, consistent with contemporary frameworks and principles of youth justice.

4. Undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory inclusive of support and/or training of Youth Justice staff and

community engagement initiatives as required to build community capacity and enhance self-management of Aboriginal

young people in communities.

1. Ensure clear and effective communication to management and ensure all required reporting and correspondence

requirements are completed within set timeframes.

1. Work effectively within a team environment by collaborating with colleagues across various business areas and agencies

to achieve shared goals and maintain a productive work environment.

1. Operate and perform all duties with cultural competence by consultation and engagement with relevant Aboriginal

employees and organisations to ensure the needs, interests and circumstances of Aboriginal detainees are properly

considered.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated cultural knowledge and experience working with Aboriginal people living in the Northern Territory.

1. Demonstrated and knowledge of the youth justice system at the local and national level, including trends and reforms.
2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Aboriginal people, organisations, and communities, respecting cultural

differences which contribute to an inclusive workplace and positive outcomes.

1. Demonstrated strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to engage and communicate

effectively with people from various backgrounds.

1. Demonstrated ability to provide training, mentoring and development of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff.

2. Current NT Drivers Licence and Working with Children Clearance.

3. Ability to travel to regional and/or remote centres.

Desirable

1. Advanced Diploma in community services or equivalent, and/or Youth Work Certificate 3 or 4 and/or Degree in Social

Work, Psychology, Criminology and Criminal Justice or similar.

The recommended applicant will be required to hold a current Working with Children Clearance notice and undergo a

criminal history check (a criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is a relevant criminal history).
