Brisbane
Cancer Council Queensland

Offer description

Cancer Council Queensland is the state's largest non-government cancer organisation, standing alongside Queenslanders in a united fight against cancer. Our mission is simple but powerful: to lead a partnership that brings communities, researchers, health professionals and supporters together to reduce the impact of cancer on people's lives.

Founded in 1961 as the Queensland Cancer Fund, we have grown into a trusted leader in cancer research, prevention and support. Every day, our work helps prevent cancer before it starts, detect it earlier, improve treatment outcomes and ensure people affected by cancer receive the care and support they need, wherever they live.

As a not-for-profit organisation, everything we achieve is made possible by the generosity of our community. With their support, we are driving progress across the entire cancer journey — from prevention and research through to survivorship and support — so that all Queenslanders can face cancer with hope, dignity and strength.

About the role

As Manager, Communications at Cancer Council Queensland, you'll be the strategic driver behind our public voice—shaping how we show up, what we stand for, and how we connect with the communities we serve. This is a role with real purpose and real impact, leading a passionate team dedicated to strengthening our brand, elevating our mission, and championing the people affected by cancer across Queensland.

You'll guide the organisation's earned and owned communication channels, ensuring every message reflects our values and advances our strategic goals. From building proactive communication plans to crafting compelling stories that resonate across the state, you'll play a central role in how Queenslanders understand and engage with our work.

You will:

* Lead and inspire a team of communication professionals, fostering creativity, collaboration, and excellence.
* Shape and steward Cancer Council Queensland's brand voice, ensuring consistency and authenticity across all communication touchpoints.
* Develop and deliver annual communication plans that grow our presence, strengthen our reputation, and support our mission.
* Drive an impactful earned media strategy, identifying opportunities to amplify our work and partnering closely with Marketing and Health Promotion teams.
* Act as the organisation's primary media contact — building strong journalist relationships, coordinating expert interviews, and proactively seeking opportunities for positive coverage.
* Prepare and deliver media training to empower spokespeople and subject matter experts across the organisation.
* Play a key leadership role in issues and crisis communication, working alongside senior leaders to protect and uphold the organisation's reputation.
* Monitor emerging risks, maintain crisis communication frameworks, and ensure the organisation is prepared to respond swiftly and effectively when needed.

About you

To be successful in this role you will bring:

* Significant experience across both public relations and corporate communications.
* Tertiary qualifications in public relations, journalism or communications.
* Ability to develop and implement communication strategies aligned with organisational objectives. Comfortable in a consulting role, offering valuable communication solutions.
* Excellent written and verbal communication with an ability to produce high-quality materials and provide robust recommendations, and to adapt message delivery to context and audience.
* Resourceful and solutions-focused, with a keen eye for detail. Able to translate concepts into effective communication materials.
* Strong leadership and influence abilities and experience, capable of motivating and developing team members to achieve departmental goals.
* Adept at working collaboratively across departments, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of communication programs.
* Ability to negotiate, influence and build strong relationships.
* Well-developed public speaking and presentation skill with experience managing media events.

Desired skills/experience

* Experience with strategic and/or change management communications in a multi-disciplinary environment.
* Experience working in the not for profit or health sector.
* A strong understanding of and exposure to contemporary Communications strategies and initiatives.
* A network of Queensland media contacts.

Benefits

* Flexible work arrangements (Flexible Work Hours and Hybrid Work options).
* ATO-Approved Salary Packaging up to the value of $18,549 per Fringe Benefit Tax year.
* Recognition and Rewards Program.
* Workplace health programs, such as Fitness Passport.
* Cancer Council Shop discount.

The successful applicant will be required to conduct a current National Police Certificate.
