The Software Technical Lead oversees a technical domain, integrates various systems, applications and services, and manages the engineers within it. They guide teams through the full development lifecycle, from problem discovery and system design to deployment and maintenance of live code, with a deep understanding of integration patterns and best practices.
While involved in day‑to‑day delivery, they also focus on strategic planning and team leadership. Collaborating closely with Product Managers, they ensure software solutions deliver strong business and customer value aligned with strategic goals.
Beyond their immediate teams, they contribute to the organisation’s broader technical vision and operational effectiveness as part of the Engineering and Delivery Leadership teams, helping shape the direction of digital products and services across the enterprise.
Responsibilities
The role involves overseeing a technical domain, integrating systems, managing engineers, guiding full development lifecycles, mentoring teams, and shaping the organisation’s technical vision.
Qualifications
* 10 years’ experience in systems development and implementation of integration solutions, including at least 3+ years in tech leadership roles.
* Proven experience in technical leadership and demonstrable ability to inspire and mentor less experienced developers in best practices for software development.
* Experience guiding teams through agile product discovery and delivery phases.
* Experience working with technical and non‑technical partners, with the capability to influence stakeholders to drive functional, efficient, and maintainable software.
* Experience overseeing the architecture and design of applications, ensuring high‑quality deliverables that align with business objectives.
* Extensive experience leading the architecture and design of backend systems using Java and related technologies ensuring scalability, reliability and performance.
* Expert knowledge in API development, microservices architecture, service‑oriented architecture, message queueing, event‑driven architecture, service mesh and databases.
* Proven technology experience with Java, Spring Boot, MySQL, PostgreSQL, AWS, Git, CI/CD, Kubernetes.
* Proficient in observability and monitoring tools such as Datadog and Splunk.
* Extensive experience with Git, DevOps practices such as CI/CD, code analysis, reviews etc.
* Experience implementing comprehensive observability, monitoring and alerting in high‑availability production environments.
* Experience with automated testing tools and libraries.
* Unix/Linux or Windows administration, as appropriate SQL database and other data store variants, such as PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch, Redis.
* Knowledge and experience of cloud platforms such as AWS, S3, Lambda, DynamoDB, CloudWatch, Kubernetes etc.
* Proven experience in performance optimisation and security considerations in cloud‑based applications.
* Confidence estimating effort for design and development tasks.
* Familiarity with collaboration tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Slack for effective team communication and project management.
