Great Adventures Cairns is seeking a qualified Diesel Fitter to join our Engineering team, maintaining our fleet of commercial vessels and associated marine equipment operating on the Great Barrier Reef.
This is a hands-on role for a trade-qualified professional who enjoys working in a marine environment and takes pride in keeping vessels safe, reliable, and operational.
About the role
As a Diesel Fitter with Great Adventures Cairns, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of our commercial vessel fleet and associated marine equipment.
This is a practical, hands-on role involving planned preventative maintenance, breakdown repairs, and fault diagnostics across marine diesel engines, mechanical systems, hydraulics and auxiliary equipment. You will work both in the workshop and on vessels, liaising closely with Engineers and Masters to ensure vessels are maintained to a high standard and ready for service.
The position is structured as a 40-hour work week across 4 days, supporting genuine work–life balance. Overtime is paid when a 5th day is worked to meet operational requirements. In addition, the role includes participation in a rotating on-call roster to support vessel operations outside of standard hours. On-call duties attract penalty rates, recognising the additional responsibility and flexibility required.
Key Responsibilities
* Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on marine diesel engines and mechanical systems
* Diagnose faults and complete repairs on vessels and associated equipment
* Conduct routine servicing, inspections and overhauls
* Maintain accurate maintenance records and job documentation
* Ensure all work is completed in line with WHS, maritime and company safety standards
* Support vessel readiness to meet operational schedules
About You
* You are a safety-focused, trade-qualified Diesel Fitter who enjoys practical, physical work and problem-solving in a marine or heavy equipment environment.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
* Trade Certificate Cert III in Mechanical Engineering (Diesel Fitter) or equivalent
* Experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, and mechanical systems
* Ability to fault-find, troubleshoot, and work autonomously
