The Field Measurement and Standardisation Team (part of the Standards and Metrology Laboratories)) Calibration and Science Officers are responsible for the calibration, acceptance testing and maintenance of a wide variety of electronic and mechanical meteorological instrumentation. Within FMS there is a specific focus on the end-to-end quality of measurements in the field including the research into the appropriateness of technology, calibration, data acquisition, physical sensor interfaces to the environment and siting of equipment.
The Calibration and Science Officers will assess new surface meteorological and hydrological instrumentation for use in the Australian network, provide technical advice and support other technical and scientific staff across the Bureau. They will be required to design laboratory and Field experiments as well as calibration and test systems, develop, operate and maintain calibration systems, use workflow and asset management database systems, technical diagrams and documentation, and procedures.
These rolls will be focused on data analysis projects supporting the characterisation of instruments as they perform in the field and maintenance/operation of the associate databases. The work is focused on understanding the factors that influence the quality, reliability and integrity of the observations the Bureau take in the field.
They will have a high level of oral and written communication skills and be able to work as part of a small team, or independently, depending on the circumstances.
