Murray Irrigation Limited (MIL) is the largest private irrigation water delivery company in Australia, operating a vast network of gravity‐fed channels across the southern Riverina. MIL delivers an average of 728GL of water each year to 2,100 landholders through efficient management of its Murray Regulated River Water Access Licences.
This full‐time role is based in the beautiful town of Deniliquin, NSW, with remote or hybrid working options available for the right candidate.
About the role
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Information and Operational Technology and as part of the Corporate Services department, the Software & Control Systems Manager will lead a multidisciplinary team of seven engineers and specialists. The role is pivotal in ensuring the reliability, security and continuous improvement of MIL's operational technology environment, including SCADA, control systems and supporting software platforms.
Responsibilities:
* Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary team of software engineers and control systems specialists, supporting performance and career progression.
* Prioritise and manage the team's delivery across project and operational work, including workload planning and meeting delivery commitments to stakeholders.
* Establish and maintain effective engineering practices and team operating rhythm – sprint planning, stand‐ups, retrospectives, CI/CD, testing and structured release processes.
* Ensure the reliability, availability and security of critical systems that support water delivery operations.
* Drive continuous improvement and modernisation of control systems and software to enhance automation and efficiency.
* Provide technical leadership and strategic direction across MIL's operational technology environment.
* Work closely with operational, engineering and asset teams to ensure systems meet business needs.
* Improve system integration, data visibility and real‐time decision‐making capability.
* Manage risks associated with system performance, cybersecurity and operational continuity.
* Support innovation and long‐term sustainability of MIL's infrastructure through technology‐enabled solutions.
Skills & Experience
* Demonstrated experience leading software engineering or technology teams that deliver operational or enterprise systems.
* Proven ability to manage engineering delivery, including planning, prioritisation and resource management.
* Strong people leadership skills, including mentoring, performance management and team capability development.
* Ability to work with operational stakeholders to translate business needs into delivery priorities and manage competing workloads.
* Experience with SCADA, control systems and operational technology (OT) environments.
* Understanding of control system integration with operational and business systems.
* Experience in utilities, infrastructure, industrial or essential services environments.
* Ability to monitor, troubleshoot and improve system performance and reliability.
* Knowledge of system security, risk and operational continuity within control systems.
* Experience working with vendors, contractors and technical specialists.
* Strong problem‐solving skills and a focus on continuous improvement.
* Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to a broader audience.
* Relevant tertiary qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline.
