This is a key leadership position requiring strong technical acumen, agile delivery expertise, and a proven ability to manage and mentor high-performing software teams.In this role, you will lead the development and implementation of KBR’s software engineering standards, tools, and environments, ensuring consistent technical excellence across all projects. You will drive agile practices, foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, and provide technical direction to ensure solutions are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest quality standards.This role is ideal for a passionate and experienced software professional with a strong background in Defence or mission-critical systems, who thrives on building team capability and delivering results in fast-paced, complex environments.ResponsibilitiesThe key responsibilities of the role will include, but is not limited to:Lead the design, support, and delivery of software capability as a program discipline across the Mission Systems, including integration of software products into the broader system architecture.Ensure software products meet required assurance and assessment standards by applying appropriate quality processes, configuration management, and state-of-the-art software engineering techniques across the development lifecycle.Oversee and implement a consistent architectural approach for all project software, providing technical guidance and architectural oversight to ensure scalable, maintainable, and robust solutions.Establish and maintain a unified software development environment and toolset to enable efficient, high-quality output from the development team.Leverage Digital Engineering capabilities, including Model-Based Systems Engineering and analysis tools, to improve development efficiency and capability.Liaise with systems engineers and other stakeholders to ensure software aligns with allocated system requirements and adheres to all relevant standards and regulatory expectations.Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.Promote best practices in software development including code quality, testing, documentation, and continuous improvement of processes, tools, and workflows.Oversee requirements validation and verification, including active participation in testing and defect resolution, while identifying and managing technical risks.Support customer engagement activities such as presentations, reviews, and workshops, and report on project progress, risks, and outcomes to senior leadership.Ensure delivery of comprehensive, high-quality software artefacts and support documentation that meet internal and external expectations.Drive initiatives to reduce technical debt, improve system performance, and ensure alignment of all software development activities with business objectives, timelines, and quality standards.Qualifications, Skills and ExperienceEssential:Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience), with accreditation by the Australian Computer Society or Engineers Australia highly desirable.Brings over 5 years of professional software development experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or team lead role, with strong proficiency in Microsoft technologies such as C#, .NET, WPF, SQL Server, Visual Studio, and Azure DevOps.Demonstrates strong experience across various software development lifecycles (Waterfall, Agile, Spiral), with particular expertise in Agile methodologies and modern object-oriented designs and architectures.Skilled in one or more programming and scripting languages, with a solid understanding of development and integration environments, continuous delivery approaches, and configuration management.Experienced in producing production-quality software within regulated industries such as defence, rail, or automotive, and knowledgeable in assurance and lifecycle standards including DO-178, MIL-STD-498, ISO 15288:2015, and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207:2017.Demonstrates comprehensive experience across the software development lifecycle, including requirements elicitation, design, development, testing, release, and documentation of technical and architectural specifications.Has familiarity with Defence ICT environments and distributed systems, and brings relevant experience or a background working within or closely with the Australian Defence Force, particularly in the Aviation sector.Proven ability to manage and prioritise tasks effectively, review and improve procedures and systems, and lead development teams to successful outcomes.Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of translating complex technical concepts into clear and persuasive language for diverse stakeholders.Must be
