Salary: Commensurate with placement on the SMS Salary Grid, based on years of teaching experience & education (TQS Category).
This is a bargaining unit position in the Professional Employees Association.
All candidates must hold a valid B.C. TRB Teacher's Certificate and be legally able to work in Canada.
Summary
St. Margaret's School (SMS) is Western Canada's only girl-centered, independent day and boarding school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations, Songhees Nations, and W_SÁNEC Nations. Founded in 1908, SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 7–12). St. Margaret's School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Programme, and we are a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
Reporting to the Vice Principal, MYP & DP, this role involves teaching instrumental music within the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) as well as grades 11 and 12 band programmes. The ideal candidate is passionate about music education, embraces inquiry-based learning, and is committed to nurturing the creative and personal development of students. The Performing Arts teacher is excited to lead a significant program of the school by exuding and inspiring a love of music across the entire community. This includes building and implementing an ambitious vision of music as reflected by robust participation in all areas of the program. Within the classroom, the Performing Arts Teacher fosters a dynamic environment that encourages collaboration, risk-taking, and a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts. The position requires strong pedagogical skills, experience with a variety of music ensembles, and a deep understanding of the IB philosophy and learner-centered teaching.

Implement and deliver the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the grades 11 and 12 instrumental and choir programmes with fidelity to IB learning outcomes and approaches to teaching and learning.Design and deliver authentic performance opportunities for students, including solo and ensemble settings.Contribute to interdisciplinary planning connecting music learning to themes by collaborating with both homeroom and specialist teachers, incorporating cross-curricular elements into lessons.Develop and deliver engaging, inquiry-based instrumental and Choral lessons that integrate creative expression, fostering student agency and creativity through improvisation, composition, and collaborative performances.Collaborate regularly with colleagues to develop cohesive units of inquiry and cross-grade musical projects.Contribute to the IB curriculum planning, including designing units, identifying relevant MYP criteria and BC learning outcomes, and writing unit reflections.Provide expert musical guidance, coaching, and feedback to ensure students achieve their full potential.Design and implement comprehensive instrumental and choral programmes that cater to the needs and abilities of our students.Collaborate with the Fine and Performing Arts Team in the planning, coordination, and showcasing of events.Provide ongoing and varied assessments to support student growth, including both formative and summative evaluations.Analyze student data to inform instruction and prepare clear, meaningful report card comments that include strengths, focus areas, and next steps for learning.Foster a safe, organized, and inclusive classroom environment that supports exploration, discovery, and mutual respect.Prepare and communicate formal written student reports, and maintain regular, informal communication with parents.Attend and participate in school events, including Meet the Teacher Evenings, Parent-Teacher Interviews, concerts, and special assemblies.Be available for parent meetings and student support conferences to collaborate on academic and social-emotional needs.Maintain a professional and collaborative approach in all interactions with students, colleagues, administrators, and families.Required Education & Experience
Current and valid teaching certification through the BC Teacher Regulation Branch.Bachelor of Education degree with an undergraduate degree in Music Education or a Music degree with teaching credentials.Certification and experience to teach in an IB Middle Years Program and a Diploma Years Program setting.Minimum of 3-5 years of experience teaching beginner and intermediate band and choir at the middle and senior school levels.Experience in planning and facilitating school-wide events, musical performances, and assemblies, supporting student participation in concerts and celebrations.Expose students to diverse musical traditions and genres, promoting cultural appreciation and global awareness.Collaborate with the school community and external partners to enrich the Performing Arts program through guest musicians, field trips, and special projects.Adapt lessons to meet the diverse needs of all learners by using various instructional strategies and scaffolding techniques.Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Familiarity with the IB MYP & DP framework, including its philosophy, assessment practices, and learner profile attributes.Proficient in current pedagogical practices to include differentiated instruction, and individual skill development.Specialization in band and vocal pedagogy, including proficiency across all primary band instruments.Demonstrated experience leading choirs or vocal ensembles.Superior communication, organizational and interpersonal skills in working with colleagues and parents.A clear understanding of Fine Arts IRPs, Ministry-approved resources, and current curriculum standards.Awareness of learning styles and developmental needs of girls and young women.Ability to establish good relationships and interact positively with all staff, faculty, and students.Positive role model to all members of the St. Margaret's community.Actively support the vision, mission, and values of our school.Work Conditions
