Job Overview
The Mechanical Technician plays a vital role in the assembly, integration, and testing of cutting-edge unmanned aerial systems (UAS) platforms.
This role requires a versatile individual with mechanical trade skills, familiarity with both electronic and mechanical systems, and practical experience to work independently or from engineering documentation.
The technician will support activities across prototype builds, flight hardware integration, structural testing, and in-field diagnostics—ensuring that our drone systems meet both engineering standards and mission requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
* Carry out mechanical and electro-mechanical integration of UAS platforms and subsystems.
* Assemble components using various mechanical fasteners, adhesives, and structural joining methods.
* Interpret and work from engineering drawings, CAD outputs, or verbal instructions.
* Support mechanical and electronic testing, including fault-finding and diagnostics.
* Work with composite materials and adhesives in structural and non-structural assemblies.
* Operate hand and power tools safely and effectively in an aerospace workshop environment.
* Provide feedback to engineers on design-for-manufacture improvements.
* Perform routine equipment maintenance and contribute to continuous improvement activities.
* Ensure safe work practices in accordance with WHS regulations and company standards.
Essential Qualifications:
* Demonstrated experience in mechanical and/or electronic testing and integration.
* Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery.
* Ability to interpret engineering drawings and carry out work with minimal supervision.
* Experience with composites, adhesives, or aerospace assembly methods.
* Knowledge of mechanical systems and component-level design principles.
Desirable Qualifications:
* Experience with CNC Machining or ability to advise on design for manufacture.
* Hands-on involvement in rapid prototyping, field servicing, or R&D environments.
* Exposure to CAD (Computer-Aided Design) systems and basic design understanding.
* Experience working in defence, aerospace, automotive, or robotics industries.
* Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (Fitting or Fitting/Machining stream) or equivalent trade qualification is preferred but not required.
* Additional mechanical or electronic trade certificates.
* Forklift license, EWP license, or similar plant/machinery qualifications.
* Defence security clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
