Payroll Coordinator
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Payroll Coordinator to join this People & Culture team for this prominent Tertiary Institution. In this pivotal role, you will coordinate accurate, compliant, and timely payroll services, ensuring strict adherence to legislative requirements, enterprise agreements, and internal policies.
Reporting to the Manager, Payroll & Compliance, you will play a key role in enhancing payroll service delivery, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and ensuring a positive employee experience for our staff.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end fortnightly payroll cycle, including data preparation, system validation, and payment authorisations.
- Ensure compliance with employment legislation, enterprise agreements, Single Touch Payroll (STP), tax, and superannuation obligations.
- Review and resolve payroll anomalies, overpayments, and complex salary packaging scenarios.
- Prepare reconciliations and reports to support audits, finance integration, and statutory obligations.
- Support annual payroll activities, including EA increases, increments, back pays, and award adjustments.
- Drive continuous improvements in payroll systems and processes, collaborating with IT and Business Analysts to resolve system limitations.
- Provide timely and accurate payroll advice to managers, staff, and stakeholders across the Instiution.
- Maintain documentation, procedures, and controls to ensure audit readiness and service excellence.
Key requirements
- Tertiary qualification with relevant experience OR equivalent expertise through extensive experience and training.
- Proven track record in end-to-end payroll coordination and high volume experience within a large, complex organisation.
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, awards, enterprise agreements, and HR policies.
- High-level Excel and MS Office skills (pivot tables, lookups, formulas, reporting, and analysis).
- Experience with Ascender or another complex system (SAP, Chris21 etc)
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a customer-focused approach.
- Demonstrated accountability and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Must have full Work Rights and willing to undergo an Australian Police Check
Desirable
- Experience with payroll/HRIS systems, financial software, and enterprise-wide technologies.
- Prior experience within the higher education or public sector environment
