Technical Illustrator – Defence Publications

Security Clearance Required: Current or reinstatable AGSVA Baseline clearance (minimum), NV1 preferred.

Work Arrangement: Primarily Remote | Occasional travel to client sites.

Type of Engagement: Initially casual with the potential to become permanent as workload increases.

We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented Technical Illustrator to join our growing Technical Publications team, supporting a broad range of defence and aerospace technical documentation projects. This role requires an excellent understanding of the DEF(AUST)5629B and 5629C standards and the ability to produce precise, professional technical illustrations for complex equipment and systems. The selected candidate will work closely with technical writers, engineers, and subject matter experts to create high-quality visual content that enhances the usability and clarity of technical manuals and publications.

Key Responsibilities:

* Produce and revise technical illustrations that meet the stringent requirements of the DEF(AUST)5629B/C specifications.
* Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical data to develop accurate and informative illustrations.
* Ensure all illustrations support the effective communication of technical information in operation and maintenance manuals.
* Collaborate remotely with cross-functional teams including technical authors, project leaders, and client representatives.
* Maintain version control and illustration assets in accordance with project documentation and quality processes.
* Participate in reviews and updates of technical documentation to ensure visual elements remain current and compliant.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

* Proven experience in producing illustrations for defence technical documentation according to DEF(AUST)5629B/C standards.
* Proficiency with illustration and design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, IsoDraw, or similar.
* Familiarity with interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and 3D CAD data for illustrative purposes.
* Strong visual communication skills and acute attention to technical accuracy and consistency.
* Ability to manage time effectively while working on multiple concurrent projects.
* AGSVA Baseline Security Clearance (essential); NV1 clearance (highly regarded)
* Understanding of Australian Defence documentation environments and compliance expectations.
* Experience with content management systems and integrated logistics support (ILS) processes.
* Knowledge of S1000D and other military publication standards.
