Offer description

Lead a remote national observatory site | Hands-on leadership | APS6 package | Unique coastal WA lifestyle role

This government agency operates nationally significant technical infrastructure supporting Australia’s positioning, mapping and space capability.

Working at the intersection of science, engineering and national systems, the organisation partners with global research and technical bodies to deliver critical data and services.

You’ll be joining a highly specialised environment where reliability, precision and operational excellence are essential.

The Opportunity

This is a rare opportunity to step into a hands-on leadership role managing a remote, high-value technical facility.

You will take ownership of site operations, infrastructure and specialised equipment, ensuring everything runs safely, reliably and without disruption.

This role offers a unique mix of autonomy, technical problem solving and leadership, combined with a lifestyle change in regional coastal Western Australia.

The Role

As Observatory Manager, you will lead the day-to-day operations of the observatory, managing facilities, coordinating contractors and maintaining critical infrastructure.

You will act as the key on-site leader, ensuring operational continuity while working with national and international stakeholders.

Your key responsibilities include:

* Leading day-to-day operations of the observatory site
* Managing infrastructure, facilities, utilities and assets
* Coordinating preventative and reactive maintenance
* Overseeing contractors, trades and service providers
* Maintaining operational records and documentation
* Liaising with national and international stakeholders
* Supporting after-hours critical incidents when required
The Ideal Person

You are a practical, hands-on leader who is comfortable working independently in a regional environment.

You bring:

* Experience in site operations, facilities or asset management
* Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability
* Experience managing contractors or service providers
* Ability to work autonomously and make sound decisions
* Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
* Safety-first mindset
* Adaptability to a regional operational setting

Backgrounds that may suit include:

* Facilities / asset management
* Defence or communications infrastructure
* Electrical / electronics maintenance
* Engineering or technical operations environments

Due to the requirements of the role, Australian Citizenship is essential.

This role is based in the Mid-West region of Western Australia. Candidates should expect to live within commuting distance (typically within 1 hour of site), with most staff based in nearby coastal communities.

Relocation is required — this is not suited to metro commuting or remote work.

Salary / Rate
* $101k – $117k + Super
