Overview
Clinical Director - Emergency Department - Staff Specialist / Senior Staff Specialist
Location: The Canberra Hospital, Garran, ACT. Closing Date: 27 October 2025. This role is within the Emergency Department of the Division of Medicine and involves leading the ED team, working with the ADON and the executive team, and supporting strategic and operational initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership to the Emergency Department in partnership with the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON).
- Collaborate with the Clinical Director of the Division of Medicine and other Unit and Clinical Directors across Canberra Health Services.
- Represent the ED in public-facing forums, Ministerial correspondence, public health matters, media engagements, and in response to complaints or coronial investigations.
- Advance the four pillars of Emergency Medicine at CHS: Education, Safety and Quality, Research, and Workforce Culture.
- Engage across CHS to improve patient flow and access to inpatient beds, and participate as a member of the Canberra Health Services Operational Committee.
- Work with a multidisciplinary team including FACEMs/FRACP-PEMs, registrars, junior medical officers, and other staff to deliver care in a transformed ED environment.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Hold Specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Meet credentialing requirements and obtain an Endorsed scope of clinical practice from the Medical Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC).
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check and comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Contribute to cross-university research links and engage with local academic partners as applicable.
Offer and Conditions
- Employment Type: Full Time, Permanent; Tenure of 3 years, with performance reviews and potential eligibility for a Level 3 Managerial Allowance.
- Total Salary Package: $305,300 to $404,970 (pro rata for part time). Package includes Base Salary ($188,151 to $254,198) plus Private Practice Scheme Allowance, On-call allowance, Medical Education Expense Allowance, and Superannuation (12%). Starting base salary is negotiable based on experience.
- Relocation reimbursement available for interstate candidates (conditions apply).
- Attraction and Retention Incentive: $50,000 - $75,000 per annum (pro rata for part time), reviewed every 2 years.
- Adaptable working conditions, salary packaging, and generous leave provisions including up to 4 weeks training/education leave and up to 5 weeks annual leave per annum (pro rata for part time).
