About Us

The City of Whittlesea is one of Australia's fastest-growing municipalities, playing a vital role in supporting a thriving and diverse community. Our vision - Whittlesea 2040: A Place for All - guides our commitment to delivering accessible services, quality facilities, and sustainable infrastructure for our residents. Our people are passionate, skilled, and diverse, creating a collaborative environment where you can contribute and grow. The wat djerring Animal Facility, located at 20 Companion Place, Epping, is owned and operated by the City of Whittlesea and operates seven days a week. In addition to serving our municipality, the facility provides pound services to Merri-bek and Darebin Councils. The facility cares for impounded and surrendered domestic animals, ensuring their physical and behavioural needs are met in accordance with the Code of Practice for the Management of Dogs and Cats in Shelters and Pounds.

The Role

Make a difference in our community! The Coordinator Animal Care leads the day-to-day operations of the Wat Djerring Animal Facility located in Epping, ensuring animals receive safe, high-quality care aligned with legislative requirements, Codes of Practice, and organisational standards. This role provides hands-on leadership to the Animal Care team, overseeing husbandry, enrichment, health coordination, and biosecurity practices, while fostering a positive, high-performing team culture. Working closely with veterinary and customer service teams, the Coordinator drives continuous improvement, strengthens stakeholder relationships, and supports positive outcomes for animals—including reunification with owners and successful rehoming.

About You

We are seeking a leader with strong animal welfare knowledge, sound operational judgment, and the ability to coordinate teams in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. You will demonstrate well-developed communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make informed decisions that balance compliance, safety, and positive animal outcomes. A commitment to continuous improvement, collaboration, and exceptional service delivery is essential. You will be resilient, compassionate, and values-driven, with a strong ethical approach and a genuine passion for improving outcomes for animals and supporting the community. If this sounds like you, then you should definitely apply!

At the City of Whittlesea, we value diversity and appreciate everyone's strengths. We are an equal opportunity employer and committed to attracting and retaining a diverse workforce that reflects our municipality. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with a disability and people identifying as LGBTIQ. The City of Whittlesea is also a Child Safe employer.

Council is committed to providing an inclusive workplace that encourages employees to participate, without discrimination, in both work-related and other activities conducted within a work context, with the support of workplace adjustments. Where possible, the Council will identify and resolve potential barriers to the recruitment and employment of people with disabilities within the organisation.

If you require a workplace adjustment to support you during the interview process, please email human.resources@whittlesea.vic.gov.au with your request outlining your preferred method of contact. Workplace adjustment (also known as "reasonable adjustment") is defined as: "Whatever is considered necessary and achievable to enable an employee to perform their job role efficiently and to the best of their abilities". A Workplace adjustment can be requested at any stage in the recruitment process and/or as a part of the employment of an individual.
