The Business Council of Australia is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Media to play a critical role in shaping and delivering the organisation's media and public communications strategy.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Public Affairs and Advocacy and working closely with policy, economics and membership teams, this role is responsible for leading proactive and reactive media engagement, providing strategic advice on media issues, and ensuring the BCA's positions are communicated clearly, credibly and effectively across all channels.

This position requires a senior communications professional with strong judgement and a collaborative approach, a deep understanding of Australia's media and political landscape, and the ability to deliver influential media strategies in a fast‑paced, high‑stakes environment.

Key Responsibilities

* Develop and deliver integrated media strategies aligned with the BCA's advocacy priorities and organisational objectives.
* Provide expert strategic media advice and support to the Chief Executive and senior leaders for public and media engagements.
* Build, maintain and leverage strong relationships with journalists, producers and key commentators across national and political media.
* Drive proactive media engagement, including pitching stories, placing opinion pieces, coordinating interviews, shaping media narratives, and developing strategies for new and emerging media channels.
* Work with the broader BCA team and membership to draw out powerful case studies for media that showcase the contribution of BCA members to the broader Australian community.
* Monitor the news cycle to identify emerging issues, risks and opportunities, and lead timely responses to reputational and crisis situations.
* Shape and execute high‑quality media and communications content, including responses to inquiries, media releases, opinion articles, speeches, talking points.
* Oversee digital and social media activity to enhance the BCA's profile, reach and influence.
* Work collaboratively across policy, economics, membership and advocacy teams to ensure consistent, accurate, persuasive and integrated communications that supports advocacy priorities and member interests.
* Manage day‑to‑day media operations, systems and engagement, including monitoring and analyse traditional and digital media coverage and performance to optimise content and campaigns.

About You

You are an experienced and credible media professional with a strong track record of delivering influential media communications and advice in complex public policy environments.

You will bring:

* At least 7‑10 years' experience in senior media or communications roles across public and/or private sectors.
* Demonstrated success developing and delivering media and communications strategies that influence public opinion, policymakers and key stakeholders.
* Comprehensive understanding of the news cycle and the Australian political process.
* A well‑established network of media contacts, including strong relationships with national, political and economic journalists and commentators.
* Exceptional writing, editing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distil complex issues into clear, compelling messages.
* Strong strategic judgement, creativity and the ability to reliably perform under pressure and in deadline‑driven environments.
* Proven experience with social and digital platforms and an understanding of new and emerging media channels to amplify messages.
* A collaborative, flexible and hands‑on approach, with a willingness to work outside standard hours and travel interstate or internationally when required.
* Demonstrated professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
