Overview
The Aviation, Land and Maritime Transport Program provides specialised, high value meteorological services that contribute to the efficient and effective operation of aviation activities within the Australian Flight Information Region and the Asia-Pacific Region. The Aviation Operations team within ALMT maintains delivery and ongoing monitoring of key Aviation products and forecasts. The National Operations Management Centre (NOMC) Meteorologist team works in partnership with Airservices Australia network and airport traffic managers, major airline meteorologists and operational staff in the Airservices NOMC. The NOMC Meteorologist provides continuous national meteorological situational awareness within the NOMC and is a focal point for enhancing operational situational awareness between the Bureau, Airservices and the broader aviation industry. The NOMC Meteorologist provides meteorological services, including the Meteorological Collaborative Decision Making (MET-CDM), a process of considering aviation-related weather criteria in forecasts to assess the potential impact on airport capacity and its consequences for Air Traffic Flow Management. The position is a 24/7 shift work position and operational shifts are worked on-site within the NOMC, based at Melbourne Airport.
Responsibilities
The role requires deep experience in operational meteorology and understanding of the Aviation industries dependencies on meteorological data. This role requires a close working relationship with the operational teams based in the Bureau's Aviation Forecasting Centres (AFCs). Specific training to enable certification will be provided to successful applicants if required.
The role also requires strong leadership skills. NOMC Meteorologists represent the Bureau of Meteorology in a professional context with one of the Bureau's major customers. The NOMC Meteorologist is the subject matter expert in the room, providing timely technical advice and guidance on weather conditions across Australia with a focus on commercial aviation. The work involves delivering high-quality, responsive decision support services and output that meets legislative requirements and customer expectations.
The role will routinely integrate meteorological intelligence from the responsible forecaster and determine weather scenarios to support Airservices in their planning for major commercial airports in Australia and at times, provide support during events involving crisis management.
