The Data Unit is an interdisciplinary team tasked with improving how the public sector uses evidence to make better decisions and policy. About the Role
We are seeking talented and motivated individuals with a passion for achieving outcomes to join us.
You will be working on PeopleWA, a nation-leading linked data asset offering a powerful tool for research, government policy and service improvement. You will work collaboratively with data providers, medical researchers, government analysts, our partners, and users to ensure systems meet real‑world needs.
This role contributes to the engineering of key software and platforms within our whole‑of‑government data infrastructure, bringing specialist software development skills to support high‑quality data engineering across the data lifecycle.
You will apply engineering discipline to data ingestion, transformation, quality assurance and secure delivery, helping deliver well‑tested, maintainable and secure systems that evolve with user and data lifecycle needs.
As part of this role, you will:
* Design, build, and maintain high‑quality, robust, and scalable data systems, with strong automated testing, clean and maintainable code, and ongoing improvements to developer experience and tooling.
* Contribute to cloud platform development and security, supporting infrastructure‑as‑code, containerisation, event‑driven patterns, secure coding practices, observability, and platform hardening alongside senior engineers.
* Help shape engineering standards and mentor junior engineers, fostering strong technical practices and a high‑quality engineering culture.
Advanced data and software engineering or security skills are not necessary. What is necessary is an understanding of how technology can deliver better outcomes. We are looking for agile and keen learners with experience in security, data, or technology and we will support you as you upskill. You will be joining an interdisciplinary team of dedicated and talented public servants from data, technical, and policy backgrounds who will want you to succeed in your role.
