Our client is a well-established, privately owned importer and distributer of steel piping, steel casing and mechanical pipe joining solutions. The company supplies a range of clients and channels that include mining and drilling operators/contractors, infrastructure, energy and water clients as well as major steel fabricators. Despite an already strong market share, the company continues to invest to ensure their long-term success and growth, this has seen them move into a large start of the art facility, with ongoing investment into additional processing machinery to continually expand and complement their offering.
The role
Reporting to the Sales Manager, the Business Development Manager will be responsible for driving sales growth and developing strategic relationships across Australia. The role combines the need for technical expertise with commercial acumen to influence specifications and secure long-term business with major mining operators, EPCMs, drillers, and Government agencies.
More specifically, you will be involved in the following:
* Identifying and securing new business opportunities for steel pipe, casing, and piping accessories;
* Developing key industry relationships and a strategic project pipeline across mining, mineral processing, and water / energy infrastructure;
* Engaging early with specifiers to influence design packages and promote the company product offering;
* Conducting site visits, audits, and product demonstrations to recommend tailored technical solutions;
* Providing technical support for both greenfield and brownfield projects, focusing on mechanical piping systems;
* Preparing and delivering proposals, technical presentations and quotations that address client needs;
* Tracking industry trends and competitor activity across key regions including the Pilbara, Bowen Basin, and Hunter Valley; and
* Collaborating with internal estimating and supply chain teams to ensure accurate proposals and timely delivery.
Required Experience
* 5+ years' experience in a similar, business development or technical sales role within the mining, steel piping, or a related industrial sector;
* Relevant technical knowledge, specifically around steel pipe & casing specifications or mechanical couplings;
* A proven track record of managing complex sales cycles and securing project-based business;
* Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills, with the ability to build rapport with site personnel to senior decision-makers;
* The ability to read and interpret technical drawings and communicate engineering concepts clearly;
* Sound computer skills, with a working knowledge of relevant project tracking, reporting and CRM packages; and
* Willingness to travel regularly to mine sites and regional locations throughout Australia.
Highly Regarded skills / experience:
* Relevant industry contacts with major mining companies and EPCMs;
* Mechanical or technical trade background; and
* Deep understanding of Australian Standards (AS / NZS) for steel and pressure piping.
