Counsellor / Advocate (12 month Contract)

The Company

The Gold Coast Centre Against Sexual Violence Inc. (GCCASV) is a feminist, community-based organisation with over 35 years of experience supporting women and young women impacted by sexual, domestic and family violence.

The service recognises the gendered nature of violence and aims to empower women through high-quality, trauma-informed counselling, support, and advocacy. We are committed to systemic change, social justice, and delivering services that prioritise safety, dignity, and respect.

The Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Sexual Violence Counsellor/Advocate to join their professional team on a

* 12 month fixed term maternity leave contract
* 4 days per week: 11:30am – 7:30pm on Tuesdays & 9am to 5pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

This role involves providing therapeutic counselling, support, and advocacy to women who have experienced sexual violence.

Working within a collaborative and supportive environment, the Sexual Violence Counsellor/Advocate will deliver both individual and group-based services, contribute to community development initiatives, and play an active role in promoting awareness and prevention of gender-based violence.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Counselling, Support & Advocacy

* Deliver face-to-face, video and telephone counselling to women affected by sexual violence
* Provide outreach counselling and support as needed
* Assist clients in accessing relevant services and resources
* Advocate for clients within legal, medical, and community systems
* Plan and co-facilitate therapeutic or psycho-educational support groups
* Maintain accurate case notes, reports and client data
* Participate in awareness campaigns, interagency meetings, and education sessions
* Contribute to the development of training resources and public awareness initiativesActively and effectively participate as a member of the staff team operating with the philosophy, aims, objectives, policies and procedures of the organisation
* Attend staff meetings, planning days, supervision, and professional development
* Participate in the development, implementation and review of the agency strategic plan, policies and procedures
* Promote the values and services of GCCASV across the community

A Successful Candidate Will Have

* A recognised tertiary qualification in psychology, counselling, social work or behavioural sciences
* At least one year of experience in a specialist sexual violence counselling role
* A sound understanding of the gendered nature of violence and a strong feminist practice framework
* Demonstrated possession of highly developed communication skills. This includes an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with First Nations People and women from diverse cultural backgrounds
* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
* High-level interpersonal and communication skills, with cultural sensitivity
* Knowledge of relevant Queensland legislation (or the ability to acquire it quickly)
* A current Working with Children Check (Blue Card) and a clear National Police Check
