Experimental Scientist Physical Oceanography
About this exciting opportunity
As our experimental scientist in physical oceanography, you will undertake data collection, processing, and analysis to deliver high-quality physical observational data streams that meet the requirements of internal and external stakeholders, and funding providers.
This role supports and enables AIMS to maintain its core capability in long-term ocean observing by leading fieldwork to maintain weather observing systems and directing and contributing to the development, assembly, and some design work of the instruments and sensors to be deployed.
About you
You will hold a tertiary qualification in physics, mathematics, physical oceanography, engineering, or equivalent disciplines, along with an understanding of oceanography.
You will have demonstrated experience in MATLAB and/or Python programming, data analysis, and database applications.
Our ideal applicant will have well-developed written communication skills, including the ability to produce scientific and field reports, proficient organizational skills, and the capability to manage field-work logistics, planning, and scheduling while being committed to quality outcomes.
Due to the fieldwork nature of this position, you will be required to hold SCUBA diving qualifications or have the ability to obtain a Commercial Diver certification to AS2815.1 or AQF Certified Scientific Diver qualifications.
You must be able to engage in offshore field trips often undertaken in demanding conditions for extended periods and at moderate heights.

In line with our Enterprise Agreement, the successful candidate will be rewarded with:
AIMS AOF Level 3 Enhanced to AOF Level 4 salary ($76,454 to $110,957 per annum) plus 15.4% superannuation
Located in Townsville (Qld)
