Payroll Officer

About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Payroll Officer to provide efficient and effective support to the Supervisor Payroll. As Payroll Officer, you will be responsible for the accurate end-to‐end processing of payroll while providing high-quality advice and support to managers and employees on payroll-related matters. You will work collaboratively within the People & Culture team to ensure payroll compliance, integrity, and continuous improvement of systems and processes.
Key Responsibilities
* Process end-to‐end payroll accurately and on time, including employee commencements, cessations, adjustments, leave audits, and terminations.
* Calculate and process pays in accordance with Industrial Agreements, legislation, and City policies and procedures.
* Review and validate payroll documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance prior to processing.
* Provide timely, accurate advice to managers and employees regarding pay, leave, superannuation, and salary sacrifice arrangements.
* Maintain the HRIS, including employee records, job changes, and entitlement variations.
* Reconcile and issue payslips and pay summaries, ensuring employee pay records meet legislative and industrial requirements.
* Prepare and process payments to payroll creditors and ensure compliance with ATO and other statutory reporting obligations.
* Maintain documentation and provide advice relating to Workers Compensation claims.
* Support payroll reporting, system administration, upgrades, testing, and troubleshooting of the HR/Payroll system.
* Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and comply with Equal Opportunity, WHS, environmental policies, and other duties as directed.
Essential Criteria
* Demonstrated experience administering payroll using a computerised payroll system, preferably within a medium-sized, multidisciplinary organisation.
* Proven ability to interpret and apply industrial agreements, legislative requirements, and payroll-related compliance obligations.
* Experience with superannuation, Workers Compensation, and statutory payroll processes.
* Strong numeracy, analytical, and organisational skills with exceptional attention to detail and ability to meet strict deadlines.
* Well‐developed interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with a strong customer service focus.
* Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, exercising sound judgement, initiative, discretion, and confidentiality.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and payroll systems, and ability to obtain a satisfactory National Police Clearance.
