**The Small Business and Agriculture Branch**
The Small Business and Agriculture Branch forms part of the Consumer and Fair Trading Division.
The Branch is responsible for making markets work well for consumers and small businesses, including those in the agriculture, Murray-Darling Basin rural water, and motor vehicle repair sectors, and ensuring an appropriate level of protection by:
- identifying potential fair trading, competition, or water-specific non-compliance in the agriculture, small business, rural water, and motor vehicle repair sectors, including through audits, initial assessments of complaints or reports, monitoring, or market studies.
- improving trader awareness and understanding of, and compliance with, relevant fair trading, competition, or water-specific legislation (including their CCA, ACL, industry code, and Water Act obligations).
- empowering small businesses and consumers to assert their rights, including through education and information initiatives.
- positioning the ACCC as a reputable, trustworthy, and responsive regulator to external stakeholders (including government and industry) in our specialist areas.
- strategically advocating for the implementation of recommendations from ACCC reviews, inquiries, and market studies, or otherwise developing an ACCC position and advocating for new laws and reforms, where laws are deficient in protecting small businesses and consumers in our specialist areas.
- Undertaking, and collaborating with other Branches on, compliance and enforcement activities.
The Branch is made up of four teams: the Agriculture Unit, the Small Business & Industry Codes team, the Water Regulation & Compliance team, and the Motor Vehicle Information Scheme team.
**Role and Duties**
As an Assistant Director, you will assist in leading teams to deliver Branch outcomes.
The duties of Assistant Director roles include:
- Manage and supervise a team undertaking compliance checks in respect to Rules, Industry Codes and/or Standards.
- Develop, implement and oversee projects of particular relevance to small businesses pursuant to the ACCC's functions under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and the Australian Consumer Law, including:
- Strategically develop, guide and deliver a program of work with multiple concurrent projects and within set timeframes, including for industry codes and business to business unfair contract terms law
- Approve a range of internal and external correspondence to a high standard, including briefs, reports and submissions.
- Develop education and awareness raising initiatives (including media and communications strategies) for small businesses, industry and other key stakeholders
- Manage the development of high quality information, research and analysis activities, and oversee the preparation of associated materials and correspondence.
- Liaise, develop and maintain strong working relationships with government agencies and other stakeholders with the aim of ensuring effective and co-ordinated policies in small business protection and regulation.
- Manage section staff to achieve ACCC objectives efficiently and effectively.
- Represent the ACCC in a professional manner.
- Financial and risk management.
- Manage media, campaigns, education and events management.
Assistant Directors may be required to work in any one of the Branch's four teams and to move to other teams as operational needs and priorities change and be adept in acquiring knowledge of ACCC protocols and systems.
The immediate vacancy is in the Small Business and Industry Codes team. This recruitment process will also be used to fill other vacancies within the Division as they become available.
