About the role
As the ICU Clinical Nurse Consultant you will provide clinical leadership and preventative management throughout University Hospital Geelong for deteriorating patients or patients with complex clinical needs in the ward setting in partnership with members of all health care teams. The Liaison Nurse Service provides a follow‐up service for patients discharged from ICU and following Medical Emergencies (METS AND CODE BLUES) in the wards. The Liaison service receives referrals from ward staff addressing concerns of clinical deterioration and provides timely review and access to ICU if required.
The Liaison Nurse demonstrates excellent clinical expertise together with outstanding interpersonal negotiation and communication skills to achieve the best possible clinical outcome and person‐centred goals. The Liaison Nurse is a resource for all clinical staff within UHG and promotes best practice in the provision of patient care through clinical initiatives and service innovation.
Key responsibilities
* Provide expert assessment, planning and review of patients post‐ICU discharge, support management of deteriorating ward patients, lead MET and Code Blue responses, and determine discharge from the Liaison Nurse service.
* Deliver clinical leadership across wards, coordinate timely ICU access for critically ill patients, collaborate with ICU medical staff and multidisciplinary teams, and promote seamless transition of care.
* Act as a clinical resource and role model, provide education and training on acute deterioration and complex care needs, support policy development, and model ISBAR clinical handover standards.
* Lead quality improvement activities, manage reporting systems (Riskman, MET registry, SLIC database), contribute to audits and safety meetings, and ensure care delivery aligns with Barwon Health policies, ANMAC standards, and organisational values.
What we're looking for
* Registered Nurse with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency.
* Clinical Nurse Specialist classification.
* Minimum of 5 years recent experience in ICU.
* Attendance at MET Nurse Training Provided by Barwon Health.
