Primary objective
The High Special Needs Support Officer at Centralian Senior College provides educational support to students who have high
special needs to enable their participation in educational programs.

Context statement
Centralian Senior College provides education to approximately 400 students in Years 10, 11 and 12 and is co-located with Charles
Darwin University. Around 50% of the student population are Aboriginal with 14% born overseas. The College aims for excellence
in all we do and believes that student success is dependent upon providing relevant, quality teaching and learning as well as a
learning environment that instils a sense of belonging. It is the only senior secondary public education provider in Alice Springs,
known for its academic success, innovative education programs and dedicated staff who place students at the centre of learning.
Centralian Senior College delivers tertiary and vocational pathways at the Grevillea Drive site, and adaptable education to students
who are transitioning to and from conventional learning models through an Alice Outcomes program at the Kempe St site.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Working with Special Education Teachers actively participate, as a team member, in the preparation, implementation and

assessment of individualised educational programs for special needs students in a senior secondary learning environment.
2. Administer first aid in accordance with school policies.
3. Develop and effectively maintain appropriate working relationships with students with special needs, families, external agencies

and work colleagues whilst maintaining confidentiality.
4. Undertake a range of clerical tasks including word processing, photocopying, data entry and classroom displays to create

classroom / student resources.
5. Assist Teachers during classroom, VET, and workplace activities, in supporting and supervising students to help achieve an

effective learning environment catering for the wellbeing of students.
6. Initiate, prioritise and perform work tasks, under limited supervision and in a reliable manner, whilst adhering to school and DET

policies in an environment of ongoing change and pressure.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven ability to show initiative, work with limited supervision, displaying initiative and flexible team skills.
2. Recent demonstrated experience to successfully support senior years programs and work effectively, positively, and

independently with students, including those with special needs and challenging behaviours and the ability to implement specific
learning strategies for students.

3. Proven ability to communicate effectively using various communication strategies and appropriate interpersonal skills with
adolescents who have a diverse range of complex needs and from diverse cultures.

4. Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively and communicating effectively in a diverse cultural environment to support
productive partnerships with students, families, and external agencies.

5. Demonstrated experience in undertaking a range of administrative tasks by meeting timeframes.
